Scott Cairigan of Ocala, Fla.,
formerly of Kings Mountain,
was the 11 year old winner in the
Pitch, Hit & Run District Com
petition held at Jacksonville,
Fla., July 26th. This event, the
second stage in the national
Pitch, Hit & Run program, pits
winners of the recently held
Local Competitions against each
other. Scott is one of more than
600 youngsters who pitched for
accuracy, hit for distance and
ran against the clock to become
eligible to advance to the third
level of Competition—the Divi
sion Championship.
Scott’s score will be compared
against the winning scores of all
other youngsters in his age group
and region of the country. The
top two scorers in each age
category will go on to compete in
that region’s Divison Champion
ship to be held in one of eleven
Major League stadiums. The
Division Championship for the
Florida area will be held at
Atlanta, Ga.
Pitch, Hit & Run is the Of
ficial Youth Program of Major
League Baseball and is open to
boys and girls, 8-13. The pro
gram, which is sponsored as a
public service by Burger King
restaurants, was developed in
cooperation with the President’s
Council on Physical Fitness and
Sports.
If Scott wins at the Division
level he may be off to the World
Series. Out of a field of 66 Divi
sion winners, the two top scorers
in each age group in the nation
will emerge. These lucky
youngsters will go on to compete
in historic Cooperstown, New
Y ork, home of Baseball’s Hall of
Fame, and will receive their
awards prior to the second game
of the 1980 World Series.
