Augiut 7. 19W Heavy Drills To Begin V- Kings Mountain High football prospects will put on the pads Friday and begin heavy prepara tion for the 1980 Southwestern 3-A Conference campaign. Head Coach Dan Brooks and his staff greeted 45 varsity and 32 jayvee candidates last Friday and today will wind up their week of light conditioning drills. “We’re happy with the tur nout,” said Brooks, who coached the Mountaineers to an 8-2 season la.st year, one of their best in several seasons. “We’re young, inexperienced and small, but we have people who want to play football and that’ll make a lot of difference.” The Mountaineers lost 21 seniors, including 17 starters. They have only one starting lineman returning. “1 believe we’ll be the smallest and most inexperienced team in the conference,” Brooks said. “Every team in the conference has folks back but us. “R-S Central, Shelby, Crest and Burns have just about everybody back,” he went on. “We lost a lot of people at skill ixisitions, so we have a lot of coaching to do. But if they’ll all stay coachable, that’s the biggest thing.” The Mountaineers will go through their annual football camp next week, practicing twice daily and also going through a number of skull ses sions, view films and hear lec tures from the coaching staff and visiting college coaches. Players will report to camp Sunday from 4-6 p.m., at which time their parents will meet with the coaching staff. Theyll return home that night and report back Monday morning. They’ll stay at the school through Thursday night. The week will climax on Fri., Aug. 15 with a 6:30 p.m. scrim mage and the annual “Meet the Mounties” cookout, sponsored by the Booster’s Club, at 8 p.m. The Mounties will then go 1*1 KI.ISIIKI) KA( II Tl KSDAY AM) TlltKSDAY (■Altt.AM) ATKINS ■ UB STKWART (iARY STKWAKT I’ublistu'i- ('l►-E<^ito|• C«-Edili>i- MFMKKK OK NORTH t AROl.INA PRESS ASStKTATUIN Till' lll•^;llll is puhlishrtl h\ Herald Publishing llinisr.
