One of the outdoor dramas, ‘Then Conquer We Must,” will be held nightly Sept. 26-28 and Oct. 3-7 in the amphitheatre at Kings Mountain National Military Park in South Carolina, a few miles south of here. Original productions covering three phases of mountain history will be presented Sept. 25-27 at Sycamore Shoals State Park near Elizabethton, Tenn. All written by Dr. Ron Day, associate professor of history at Tennessee State University, the Tennessee dramas will cover the ‘Campaign and the Battle of Kings Mountain” on Sept. 25, the ‘Transylvania Purchase” on Sept. 26, and the “Seige of Fort Watauga by the Cherokee In dians” on Sept. 27. ‘Then Conquer We Must” was written in 1951 by the late Robert B. Osborne of Kings Mountain, N.C. It was adapted by Kings Mountain newspaper man Thoams McIntyre for presentation this year. The direc tor will be Dr. Charles R. Han- num. Director of Theatre at Limestone College, Gaffney, S.C. Tickets for Then Conquer We Must,” limited to 500 per performance, are available through the Chamber of Com merce, 108 W. Then Conquer We Must,” like the Sept. 25 production at Sycamore Shoals State Park, is based on the march of the ‘Over mountain Men” to Kings Moun tain and the ensuing battle there. The other productions at Sycamore Shoals all of which will be directed by Nils Cruz of the Jonesboro (Tenn.) Repertory Theatre, are based on other historical events in the moun tains. The ‘Transylvania Purchase” tells the story of what still is the largest private real estate tran saction in the history of this na tion. Daniel Boone and Richard Henderson bought some 20-million acres of what today is East Tennessee and Southeast Kentucky from the Cherokees for 10,000 English pounds in 1775. The “Seige of Fort Watauga” tells of what happened one year later when the Cherokees, unhappy with the growing influx of white settlers, laid seige to pioneers gathered inside Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals. All four productions will utilize non-professional actors for all roles. Rehearsals already are well underway.
