Open House Is Sunday At Local NG Armory Sunday will be a day of celebration and remembrance at all National Guard armories across North Carolina. On that day, citizen soldiers of today, will honor the 40th anniversary of the first call up of North Carolina National Guard units in 1940 prior to the start of World War II. The mobilization date of September 16,1940 was also the same date that President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service RCA TV Act that provided manpower to strengthen U.S. Military Forces. On September 16,1940,4,380 North Carolina Guardsmen reported for active duty that first day of mobilization. The men were members of the 30th Infan try Division, one of the first four National Guard divisions mobilized. The men were called from 47 different towns in the State of North Carolina. The mobilization station for the 30th Division was Fort Jackson, S.C. At that time, only one Na- Football Season Is Upon Us Again. Company K was made up with members from all parts of Cleveland County and was located in Shelby. (The Shelby unit is now an element of the local Kings Mountain Unit, and under the Command of Captain Thomas E. West Jr. of Gastonia, N.C.) Members of Company K which was activated and families of the members activated are assembling at the National Guard Armory in Shelby in a special ceremonies honoring those members who were called to active duty 40 years ago. The local National Guard unit, which was organized in 1948, will be observing “open house” between the hours of 24 pjn. Sunday. Captain Thomas E. Clearing House Is Established A housing clearing house has been established to accomodate the anticipate large number of visitors to the City of Kings Mountain Oct. 3-7. The expected crowds will be on hand here to help celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Campaign and Battle of Kings Mountain by taking part in events scheduled for each of the five days of the local celebration. Availability of lodging in Kings Mountain and surroun ding cities is being compiled by the Housing Subcommittee of the 200th Anniversary Celebra tion Committee. The list in cludes motels, hotels and private homes making rooms available during the celebration. Visitors planning to stay over night in the Kings Mountain area may obtain up-to-date infor mation on accomodations by writing Housing, P.O. Box 49, Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086, or by calling (704) 739-3466. Potential visitors are urged to make their reservations as early as possible. Batde Shirts Are On Sale Colorful T-shirts that com memorate the 200th anniversary of the Campaign and Battle of Kings Mountain now are available for purchase by the public. The T-shirts, with appropriate lettering and emblems in three colors, sell for $5 each and are available in adult sizes small through extra4arge. Proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts and other memorabilia will help defray the costs of staging the Sept. 23-Oct. 7 celebration. Orders for the T-shirts may be placed through members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association in Virginia, Ten nessee, North and South Carolina and Georgia, or at Celebration Headquarters at 135 West Mountain Street in Kings Mountain. The T-shirts and other celebration souvenirs are on display and for sale at the Celebration Headquarters. Hours are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. REUNION The third annual HuUender, Burton, Fails reunion will be held Sunday, Sept. 21 at 12:30 p.m. at Lake Crawford Shelter No. 4.
