NoTsmbw 8. 1980-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Paa» SA Jl KM Teams 1-2 In Sectionals Kings Mountain High’s Bridget Glass and Kim Moss defeated teammates Jamie Hum phries and Wanda Witherspoon 6-3, 6-2 Friday to win the doubles title in the Western Sec tional High School Tennis Tour nament at Shelby. By finishing 1-2 at Shelby, the two Kings Mountain teams qualify for the Western Regionals Tournament to be played Wednesday and Thurs day at Hickory High School. The top eight teams there ad vice to the Nonh Carolina High Schools Athletic Associa tion Tournament next week at Chapel Hill. Kings Mountain finished third in the race for the team trophy. Shelby won with 37 points, followed by Ashbrook with 32 and KMHS 25. Shelby’s Bonnie Wilkinson defeated Ashbrook’s Betsy Short 6-1, 6-1 for the singles crown. The two Kings Mountain teams breezed to the doubles finals with little trouble. Both had byes in the first round and both teams won all of their earlier matches in straight sets. The two KM teams were seeded 1-2. Glass and Moss, who ran their season’s record to 15-1, defeated Gantt and Summers of Cher- ryville 6-0 and 6-2 in the second round. They defeated Carswell Jayvees Lose 16-0 To Shelby Kings Mountain High’s jayvee footballers dropped their final game of the season Thurs day to Shelby, 16-0, to finish the year with a 3-6 record. Glass and Humphries will be making their second trip to the regionals, where they lost out in the first round last year. Coach Ed Guy hopes the experience they gained last year will help them gain a berth in the state this year. This is Witherspoon’s and Moss’s first trip to the regionals. “Last year, they were nervous being there for the first time and • dropped matches they should have won,” Guy said. “Sometimes, it all depends on where you’re placed in the tour nament, and sometimes it takes a little luck.” Guy will go to Hickory tonight for a coaches meeting, at which time seedings and pairings will be decided. “I feel like Glass and Moss will be seeded in the top four,” he said. Tf so, that should put them in good position to finish in the ' top eight and go to the state.” ' The loss Friday to Glass and Moss was the first for Hum phries and Witherspoon, who played the number two position for the Mountainettes. They will carry an 11-1 record to Hickory. Kings Mountain Junior High’s Patriots wrapped up an unbeaten season Wednesday at John Gamble Stadium, defeating Chase 24-16 in a non-conference game. The Patriots, who won the Western Junior High Athletic Association championship under coaches David Heffner and John Bumgardner, finished with a f t. 64>-l overall.^cord. Ir Ikin^ Mdirfifan buili^iip an ISO halftime lead with its ninth graders, then played mostly seventh and eighth graders in the second half. The Patriots ran up 325 yards total offense to only 64 for the visiting Trojans. Curt Pressley led the rushing with 92 yards in nine carries. Arnold Jordan add ed 24, Jeff Chapman three. Brad Reynolds 41, Lavar Curry 15, Thomas Putnam 21, Eric Odoms three and Michael Smith 11. The Pats jumped out front 6-0 with 2:24 left in the first period when quarterback Todd Clon- inger threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Pressley. The TD was set up by a fumble recovery by Dale Moore. Defensive end David Parker recovered a fumble in the Chase endzone to put the Patriots up 12-0 with 4:32 left in the half. Pressley scored on a nine yard run with 1:26 remaining to give the KM forces an 18-0 advan tage at intermission. ' Chasd scored on a 22 yard ran with 7:50 left in the game and ran a two-point conversion to cut the score to 18-8. Kings Mountain got its final TD with 4:11 left when seventh grade quarterback Roderick Boyce and eighth grade end Lavar Curry hooked up on a 60-yard touchdown pass. Chase got its final score with 40 seconds left, scoring on a three-yard run and another two- point conversion. Shawn Rainey had a big day on defense for the Patriots, recording three individual tackles, three assists and three quarterback sacks. Other standouts on defense in cluded David Parker, Dale Moore, Shane Burton, Jeff Chapman, Randy Whitaker, Calvin Goode, Pressley, Put nam, Mike Grier, Eric Odoms and Steve Falls. “We’re real proud of our boys,” noted coaches Heffner and Bumgsudner. “We’ve had this group for two years now and theyVe ^ven us two undefeated seasons and two conference championships. The high school can look forward to a good group of sophomores next year. “It was hard to get up for this baligame after winning the con ference championship last week,” Heffner said. “But 1 told the kids it would be a matter of playing on pride. They showed how proud they were and went out and played a good baligame.” The group of ninth graders posted a 12-0-1 record over the piast two seasons.
