Nornnbw 6. 19t0 DAVID ALEXANDER Alexander Completes Training David Alexander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Alexander of 1160 Westover Drive, Kings Mountain, has completed basic training at Ft. Dix, N.J. Mr. and Mrs. Alexander at tended graduation ceremonies there on October 29. David graduated as one of the top soldiers in his class and was awarded the Expert Rifle badge for his performance as a top- notch marksman. Alexander, a 1980 graduate of Kings Mountain High, joined the Army’s Delayed Entry Pro gram (DEP) during his senior year. At that time he was guaranteed Small Arms Repair, one of the many technical skill training programs available in the Army. He reported for active duty on September 3. Mr. Alexander was impressed with the graduation ceremony and the “royal treatment” his family received. “David is proud to be a member of the U.S. Ar my,” he said. “I was doubtful when David enlisted but know how that he made the right deci sion.” Pvt. Alexander started the Small Arms Repair course on November 3 at Aberdeen Prov ing Grounds, Maryland. When he graduates, he hopes to return to Kings Mountain for the Ar- ittv’s Hometown Recruiter’s Aid Program, where he will work closely with his recruiter to find qualified applicants for the Ar my. SUMMER CRISP Celebrates Birthday Fire Guts Carroll Home KM Sertoma Club Organizing (From Page 7-A| consisting of Sertomans in the medical profession was selected by Lowell Schmidt, then Inter national president, to study the possibility of a program to help persons handicapped in hearing or speech. To further study the needs and possible methods of aiding the hearing and speech handicapped, the Board of Ser toma International made special trips to New York and Washington, D^C.. to confer with the officials of the Deafness Research Foundation and the American Hearing Society. The Board enthusiastically decided that Sertoma Clubs should undertake to participate in the important field of providing assistance to the millions of children and adults handicapped by hearing and speech im pairments. Speech and Hearing Clinics have been built, operated and staffed by the &rtoma Clubs of St. Petersburg and Sarasota, Florida, for several years. The Sertoma Club of Houston, Texas, founded the Houston School for Deaf Children and has operated it. Many other clubs have had suc- cessKil projects in this field. The Sertoma Foundation has opened five communicative Disorders Centers dedicated to research and treatment of the multitude of communicative disorders. were the three major emphasis programs recommended by the Sertoma International Board of restrictions as to race, color, creed or religion. The National Heritage, Ser vice to Mankind Award and Hearing and Speech Programs Directors to the clubs for com munity service sponsorships un til July 1, 1971, when a fourth program was recommended. SERTEEN and COLLEGIATE SERTOMA Clubs are now be ing organized on high school or college campuses, or otherwise in communities, by Sertoma Clubs or by other SERTEEN or COLLEGIATE SERTOMA CLUBS. Membership is open to young men and women, with no SERTEEN_ and COLr LEGIATE SERTOMA Clubs exist to afford youth the oppor tunity to serve their fellowman. Such clubs promote the freedom of individuals, the free enterprise system, good government, mutual tolerance and understan ding among all peoples.
