ISaO-UNGS MOUNTA» I Kings Mountain High’s basketballers split a Southwestern 3-A Conference doubleheader with Shelby Fri day night at the KMHS gym, the Mountaineers winning 72-67 and the Mountainettes losing 58-50. The local fives continue SWC warfare tonight with a key doubleheader at North Gaston. The Mountaineers, now 2-0 in the SWC and 4-0 overall, held the lead most of the ballgame but never could ice the victory over the determined Golden Lions. Kings Mountain built up a 16-point advantage a minute in to the fourth period, but a late comeback bid by Shelby cut the score to 70-67 with 30 seconds left. Carl Smith hit a pair of free throws to clinch the victory. Paul Ingram set the scoring pace for the Mountaineers with 22 points. Todd Wray added 13 and Smith 10. Quinton Lytle of Shelby was the game’s top scorer with 25 points. The Mountaineers blazed to a 20-9 first quarter lead but Shelby cut the gap to 30-25 at intermis sion. The Mountaineers got another hot hand in. the third quarter and stretched the lead to 49-37 going into the final eight minutes. Kings Mountain’s girls battled from 13 points down at the beginning of the fourth quarter to pull withinTour, but Shelby’s clutch free throw shooting in the final minutes proved to be the difference. The Lady Lions hit on 18 of 31 shots from the charity stripe while the Mountainettes con nected on only four of 18. Kings fountain hit only one foul shot H the seconi half.^| aiH mg Kings Mountain’s TJiane Williams, who drove the baseline for two consecutive baskets to cut the difference to four (5248) with a minute to play, had one of her best all-around games of the year which a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds. But she was the only Kings Mountain player m double figures. Brenda Cannon led three dou ble digit scorers for Shelby with 17 points. Shelby led by 9-6 after one period, 23-20 at intermission and 42-29 going into the final eight minutes. Kings Mountain, 1-1 in the SWC and 2-2 overall, hit only 27 percent from the floor in the first half and 44 percent in the second half.
