Outstanding Y oung Educator
Award. The local Jaycee unit

Grover Town Council
Approves Water Lines

Ronald Queen to keep our pro
mise on the water”.
Mrs. Byers and Philbeck said
they were totally opposed to
constructing the line on
undeveloped properties unless
the property owners share the
expense of the line. “Is he willing
to share any of the expense of
the costs?, asked Philbeck.
Comm. Queen said that Ham-
:biiight and Herndon had in
dicated they were not.
The board, by a unanimous
vote, agreed to hire a second
school crossing guard at cost of
$1,072.00 for the school year
and buy the uniforms and voted
to receive applications at the
next meeting.
Mayor W.W. McCarter ques
tioned the need for an additional
guard, noting that normally two
to four children walk in the area
of Highway 226 where the new
guard is to be employed to help
children cro.ss the street as they
go to and from Grover School.
Comm. Philbeck pointed out
that Highway 226 is curvy and a
dangerous crossing with heavy
tankers and big trucks on the
road at 3 p.m. when children
walk from school. Comm. Moss
added that “we may be over
reacting but 1 don’t think Grover
taxpayers will disagree with put
ting two crossing guards out
there.”

Speight
Is Promoted
Eddie D. Speight, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Roy D. Speight of
Route 5, Albemarle, has been
promoted in the U.S. Air Force
to the rank of staff sergeant.
Speight is an inventory

hired by the board after an acci
dent at Grover School Dec.
19th, said that children ap
preciate the assistance she is giv
ing and “are not afraid to cross
the roads when 1 am there.” She
said that children have become
more cautious and are not play
ing in the streets but go im
mediately home from schotrl.”
Mrs. Bennett suggested that
volunteers be sought to serve as
traffic guards during the morn
ing hours but Edward Philbeck
disagreed.
Comm. Queen said that he did
not feel that Grover school
patrons are getting enough from
school taxes and said that the
KM Board of Education should
be contributing more to the
school safety program. The KM
board voted at a recent meeting
to install two flashing lights with
the Grover Board to pay for
power and the state highway
system to lake care of
maintenance.
Mayor McCarter suggested
that the board “draw a line and
not let your emotions run ttx)
high” and said that he didn’t feel
that two guards were needed in
light of report from Principal
Jim Scruggs that only 30
children walk to and from school
each day.
president of the Kings Mountain
Jayeees in 1975 and “has given
many hours of service to the
Kings Mountain Jayeees and the
community.”
Mauney is the first Kings
Mountain Jaycee to ever win the
award.
Other special awards went to
Gary Stewart and the Kings
Mountain Herald for outstan
ding coverage of Jaycee projects;
and to Darrell Austin, Wilson
Griffin, Bill Grissom, Grady
Howard Sr., Bob Maner, John
Mitchell and Bob Myers, former

“continuing service to the Kings
Mountain Jayeees.”
Mitchell was also honored
with the I'ormer Jaycee Award,
a first-time presentation to a
former member who continues
to offer outstanding service to
the club.
Mitchell, who is employed by

lion for the Kings Mountain
Water System in the sixties.
Past President David Dilling,
who presented the award, said
Mitchell “has always been will
ing to help without receiving
anything except our heartfelt
thanks.”
Dilling pointed out that Mit
chell often offers his sign
painting talent free of charge for
community projects, and he
praised Mitchell for his work on
the Red Cross sign on Highway
74 W'esi which encourages
citizens to give blood.
