Opens Next Week SHERYL GOODE KMHS girls track returnee Girls Track Team Small Kings Mountain High’s girls track team will be competitive in some events, but a lack of depth will hurt them in the overall run for the Southwestern 3-A Con ference title this spring. Coach Kathy Brooks has only IS girls out, one of the smallest turnouts in years. The team opens SWC action on March 18 at South Point. Brooks has eight returnees and seven newcomers. She ex pects the Mountainettes to be stronger in the field events. “It’s really hard to tell how we’ll do," she said. “Some girls who were on the bctsketball team just came out and I really haven’t had a chance to look at them all together.” Brooks expect Crest and East Gaston to be among the teams to beat. The Mountainettes’ returnees include Diane Williams in the long jump, Kathy Stamey in the mile, Bridget Glass in the hurdles, Sheryl Goode in the tri ple jump, Linda Stowe in the shot and discus, Gloria Campbell in the high jump and long jump. The Mountaineers host Freedom High of Morganton Friday at 3:15 in their first home match of the season. Jay Schronce and Chris Barnette teamed for a doubles victory to give Kings Mountain its only win Tuesday against a veteran Ashbrook team. The Mountaineers were play ing without the services of senior Scott Hardin, who will be out for two to three weeks with a severe ly sprained ankle. “Even though we lost badly some of the guys’ scores are im proving,” noted Coach Ed Guy. “We’re showing some promise. We’re just going to have to patch up things and get people where they can play with confidence.” Both of the Mounties’ losss thus far, to Huss and Ashbrook, were to teams that are con sidered strong in the Western 4-A Conference.
