Mounties Defeat Crest 12-7 Kings Mountain’s Moun taineers opened defense of their Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball crown Friday afternoon at Crest, outscoring a veteran Charger team 12-7. The victory gave the Moun- lies an early lead in the SWC race as no other teams have yet to be involved in a conference contest. The Mountaineers, whose bats came alive for the second straight game after two sub-par hitting performances to open the season, slammed out four home runs among their nine bats. Robert Anderson cracked a pair of roundtrippers to drive in three runs, Brent Bell slammed a two-run homer and Terry Bullock had a two-run shot. Anderson and Alan Van Dyke led the plate attack with two hits each. Ricky Proctor, a senior righthander who was 6-1 for last year’s .state runner-up team, worked the first four innings and picked up his first win of the year. He received relief help from sophomores Jamie Greene and Roy Mathis. Craig Washburn, a southpaw who is regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the SWC, took the loss. He received laie- inning relief help from Johnny Greene. Crest took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but the Mounties got four runs without a basehit in the third inning to assume command. Bell and Tony Boyce led off the inning with walks and were sacrificed by Anderson. Van Dyke then drew a walk to load the bases and Proctor drew a walk to force in the tying run. The go-ahead run scored when Bullock reached on a fielder’s choice and the other two scored on an error. Anderson slammed his first homer in the fourth inning to put the Mounties on top by 6-2 and the junior outfielder added his second in the fifth and Bell added his two-run shot as the Mountaineers went ahead by 94. After Crest cut the margin to 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth the Mounties added a singleton in the sixth for a 10-7 edge. Terry Chapman and Bell walked, Boyce got an infield single and Chapman scored on a throwing error. The Mountaineers closed out the scoring in the seventh inning of Bullock's two-run homer. “We played a real good ballgame and the pitcehrs had good control,” noted veteran Coach Barry Gibson. “Crest made some mistakes that hurt them.” The Mountaineers, 1-0 in the conference and 2-2 overall, arc scheduled to host R-S Central’s Hilltoppers at 4 p.m. today at Lancaster Field. ■■ ■' HOMER HITTERS — Robert Anderson, Terry Bullock and Brent Bell, left to right, hit home runs Friday to lead Kings Mountain's Mountaineers to a 12-7 victory over Crest in the Southwestern 3-A Conierence baseball opener ior both teams. The Mountaineers are in a rebuilding year under veteran coach Steve Foster, but they should be competitive in a number of events. The Mountaineers have 11 returning lettermen and 32 new faces. Bessemer City and Cherryville are both members of the Southern District 7 2-A Con ference. The Mountaineers open Southwestern 3-A Conference action on Fri., Mar. 20 at South Point. The KMHS girls track team opens its season Wednesday in a conference meet at South Point. The Mountainettes have one of their smallest teams in years, with only 15 participants, but Coach Kathy Brooks has several good individual performers. KM veterans include Diane Williams, Kathy Stamey, Bridget Glass, Sheryl Goode, Linda Stowe, Gloria Campbell, Bam McClain and Cindy Weaver. Newcomers include Roberta Young, Laura Hendrixson, Lisa Crawford, Angie Odums, Rebec ca Moore, Cynthia Frazier and Beth Ellison.
