April 9. 1991 Grover Seeding Project Still Draws Controversy (From Pago 1-A) those who signed the petition Till ed in our yards to the height of the curb.” Mrs. Dick Eaker said that she didn’t give the town permission to dig a ditch on her property and that her “shrubbery had been torn to pieces and almost washed away by water. Mayor McCarter said that he didn’t think a culvert could be con structed [larallel to N.C. 29 but that he would report the drainage problem to the State Highway Department. Mrs. Eaker, who resides on Pine St., said the town paved the road to keep the dust out of her neighbor’s house. “I gave you permission to build the road but not the ditch”, she contended. In other business: Mayor McCarter reported that he attended a meeting in Raleigh with officials of EPA on Grover’s proposal to “break out of the Gaston County 201 sewer study plan.” He said a meeting is scheduled to review the sug gested changes on Wed., April 15, at 10:30 a.m. in the Depart ment of Environmental Manage ment office in Raleigh. Before this meeting, Mr. McCarter said he would attend a meeting with representatives of all municipal governments involved, along with their consulting engineers to review the DEM ruling. The county meeting has been set for Friday, April 10, at 10 a.m. in the Department of Social Ser vices Conference Room on Y ork Street directly west of the Gaston County Courthouse. Mayor McCarter said that engineers are already working on developing a package “just for Grover” and that he was en couraged with response made by EPA officials and engineers at the March 12th meeting. “Grover is all tied up in this 201 study and we need to go ahead with our much needed sewer im provements.”, he said. ‘Our sewage project has been wrapped up in government red tape for the past four years but EPA representatives with whom we talked were of the agreement that Grover should never have been lumped into the greater Gaston 201 facilities plan”, he said. “Our water system is in good shape”, he said, but the project can’t go out for bids until Clean Water Bonds monies are in hand. In 1980 the system was self-supporting and all indica tions are that it will be again this year.
