Kent Green, 13, Drowns
Sunday In Buffalo Creek

Kent Green, 13, drowned Sun
day in Buffalo Creek near
Grover.
The youngster apparently slip
ped into a “pot hole” and fell in
to 10-12 feet of water, according
to Coroner Bennett Masters who
investigated.
Masters said the boy had been
fishing Sunday morning with
Harold and Janice Bumgardner
and their children, Juiie and Joe
Bumgardner. Masters said the
boy fell into an area where a pav
ing firm had been dredging and
digging sand.
The accident occurred about
11:30 a.m.
Richard Byers, a diver with
the Kings Mountain Rescue
Squad, pulled the boy’s body
from the water at 12:15.

Cleveland County Memorial
Library Bookmobile will be in
Kings Mountain Tuesday and
Thursday.
The Bookmobile’s schedule
for Tuesday includes slops at the
home of Mable Rabb at noon; at
12:45 at the home of Addie
Grier; at 1 p.m. at North School
and at 1:45 p.m. at the Kings
Mountain Library.
Thursday, the Bookmobile
will be at the home of Ruth C.
Vess in Oak Grove Community
at 11:15 a.m.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Tuesday afternoon at 4
p.m. from Midview Baptist
Church. Rev. Fred Wells, Rev.
John Frazier and Rev. Bill
Bowen will officiate, and inter
ment will be in Mountain Rest
Cemetery.

Monday
Funeral services for Thomas
Henry Mitchem, of Route 4 who
died Friday in Kings Mountain
Hospital, were conducted Mon
day afternoon from Shiloh AME
Zion Church of Grover by the
Rev .James C. White. Interment
was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Mitchem was a native of
Cleveland County and son of
Mrs. Lizzie Orr Mitchem of
Kings Mountain and the late
Jordan Mitchem. He was a
member of Shiloh AME Zion
Church.
Other survivors include a
brother, Frank Mitchem of
Kings Mountain; three sisters,
Mrs. Marvita Spann of New
York City, Miss Virginia Mit
chem of Charlotte and Mrs.
Ruby Lee Burris of Kings Moun
tain.

NHS Induction Held
The Kings Mountain Chapter
of the National Honor Society
held the annual induction
ceremony recently in B.N.
Barnes Auditorium.
Nine members of the present
Junior Class were selected for
membership: Pam Hatch, Sandy
Appling, Terry Feaster, Laura
Herndon, Lisa Roark, Laura
Bumgardner, Janet Blair, Bob
Smith and Christa Williams.
In order to challenge high
school students to use their
scholastic opportunities to the
best of their abilities and to
recognize those who do so, the
high school principals organized
the National Honor Society in
1921. Members are chosen from
those who do outstanding work
scholastically and also possess to
an unusual degree the qualities
of good citizenship, character,
leadership and service.
To become eligible for
membership in the Kings Moun
tain Chapter, a candidate must
be a member of the Junior Class,
have a scholastic average of
3.400 or higher and have been a
student in this school at least one
semster.
Membership in the National
Honor Society is the highest
honor this school can confer
upon a student.
The senior members of the
Kings Mountain National
Honor Society are: Terry
Bumgardner, Carol Edwards,
Bobby Hagans, Eddie Hammett,
Stephen Lee, Jeff Lineberger,
Robert Lutz, Leigh Mauney,
Gerald Robinson, Janice Scog
gins and Diane Williams.

Dr. Blanton Appointed
Director Of Research
Dr. C. Dewitt Blanton,Jr. was
appointed recently to the posi
tion of Director of Research and
DR. DEWITT BLANTON
Graduate Studies at the Univer
sity of Georgia School of Phar
macy.
Dr. Blanton is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Dewitt Blanton.Sr. of
Kings Mountain. He and his
w ife, Brenda, and daughter. Dee
Ann, reside in Athens,Ga.
Dr. Blanton was awarded the
B.S. degree by Western Carolina
University. Graduate study led
to the Ph. D. in Medicinai
Chemistry at the University of
Mi.ssissippi. He was grantaed a
post doctoral fellowship in
Organic Chemistry by the
University of Indiana. Dr. Blan
ton came to the University of
Georgia in 1968 after serving
four years on the School of Phar
macy faculty at Auburn Univer-
sitv.
