Central Awards Given Central School presented numerous awards to students during Awards Day recently. The Central School Achieve ment Awards were presented for outstanding achievement in an academic subject. The sixth grade awards are given to the students who make the highest score on the reading and mathematics sections of the California Achievement Test. Each of the students has also maintained a grade of B or better in that subject throughout the year. The winner of the math award was Linda Green and the winners of the reading award were Brian Black, Lisa White and Bryant Wells. The Seventh grade awards are given to the top three students in each of four academic areas. These awards are based on the scores on the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills. Each of these students has also maintain ed a grade of B or better in the subject. Language Awards- Jennifer Bradley, Chip Caldwell, Patrick Hamrick and John Webster. Math Awards-Karen Biddix, Jennifer Bradley, Lisa Buchanan and Randy Garner. Social Studies Awards- Jennifer Bradley, Patrick Hamrick, Kathy Simpson. For the second consecutive season ‘Then Conquer We Must” will be presented at the Kings Mountain National Military Park amphitheatre. The outdoor drama is the Tom McIn tyre adaptation of Robert B. Osborne’s play recreating the events leading up to the Battle of Kings Mountain and is produced by Limestone College in Gaff ney, S.C. Dr. Charles Hannum, the col lege’s theatre department head and director of the play, an nounces that many Kings Moun tain residents will participate this year, both in acting and technical roles. Suzanne Amos-Grabus, origina.'y from Kings Mountain and now living in Gatonia, will once again play the leading lady, Virginia Salter. An understudy and singer-dancer for “Horn in the West” at Boone in 1974, Ms. Grabus also performed as a singer-dancer in "Wilderness Road” in Berea, Kentucky, in 1973. She Is the program direc tor for Lifeline Systems, Inc., an emergency communications system tor the elderly and han dicapped persons. The supporting role of Mrs. Rebecca Story is played by Joe Ann McD .niel, a veteran actress and director with the Kings Mountain Little Theatre who performed this role in last year’s production. For her direction of “How The Other Half Loves”, “Blithe Spirit” and The Boy Friend”, she received the Best Director of the Year from the Little Theatre. In other produc tions she portrayed Edith Wimsiey in “Surprise”, Ethel Savage in ‘The Curious Savage” and the Jewish mother in “Come Blow Your Horn.” For the second season. Rev. Harwood T. Smith will play Lord Cornwallis and Rev. Doak. Procedure Discussed From Pago I-A teacher under discussion was employed in an interim positon with the system this school year. Rev. Reb Wiesener returns to ‘Then Conquer We Must” as Col. John Sevier, the leader of the mountainmen. Mr. Wiesener is a seasoned performer with such roles to his credit as Count Dracula in the Gaston College production. Prince Charming in the Kings Mountain Little Theatre’s ‘Cinderella” and Vic tor Volasco in Neil Simon’s “Barefoot In The Park.” An ac complished speaker and orator, Mr. Weisener has won several awards in oratory including First Place in the V.F. W. ‘Troud to Be An American” competition and a second place in the state for the American Legion com petition. Edward Hammett will play British Officer No. I, Chip Caldwell will play British Officer No. 4 and Debbie Rushing will play Mrs. Sevier and Deia Parker will dance. Kings Mountain residents working with the technical crew are Dawne Brazzell and Cathy Loveless of the prop crew, and Laura Anderson of the publicity crew.
