To Open
July 4th
The Kings Mountain Parks
and Recreation Department will
be sponsoring a Trade Lot Yard
Sale on Saturday, July 4th from
10 A.M. until about 9 in the
evening. Areas will be set aside
adjacent to the Deal Street Pool
on Parker Street, which will be
closed to traffic and parking on
that day. This Giant Yard Sale
will coincide with the City’s An
nual Fourth of July Celebration,
which is shaping up to be even
bigger and better than last year’s
celebration, which generated a
large volume of pedestrian traf
fic at the Deal Street Complex.
With inflation hovering in dou
ble digits and the price ofgas
where it is today, more and more
families are choosing to stay
closer to home and participate in
local area events. A capacity
crowd is anticipated for this up
coming 1981 Fourth of July
Celebration.
Any groups or individuals in
terested in participiating and sell
ing any articles at this Yard Sale,
are urged to contact the Parks
and Recreation Department as
soon as possible. There are a
limited number of areas
available, which will rent for on
ly S4.00 for the entire day.
Reservations will be taken up
until all areas are sold out or un
til 5 P.M. on Friday, July 3rd,
whichever comes first. These
reservations can be made at the
office of the parks and Recrea
tion Department, located on the
second floor of the New City
Hall Building from 9 to 5 Mon
days through Fridays, or Room
102 of the Neighborhood Facili
ty Center from 2 to 9 Mondays
through Thursdays and 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Fridays. All area selec
tions will be done on a first<ome
first-served basis at the time of
registration.

Pamela Hatch, a rising senior at
Kings Mountain High School,
attended a conference for
noteworthy students conducted
by North Carolina State Univer
sity’s School of Engineering June
22-24.
The outstanding student was
one of some 100 North Carolina
high school students gaining an
introduction to engineering dur
ing the three-day program held
at the Raleigh csunpus.
Entitled “Summer Engineer
ing Competitions to Attract
Noteworthy Students”
(SECANTS), the conference was
arranged through the NCSU
Division of Student Affairs.
Those attending were selected
by their high school principals
and counselors on the basis of
outstanding academic
achievements, especially in the
areas of science and
mathematics.
A primary purpose of the con
ference was to introduce high
school sophomores, juniors and
seniors to career opportunities in
the engineering profession and
to interest them in enrolling in
one of the engineering cur-
riculums at N.C. State.
The program involved
students in project competitions
related to engineering activities.
SECANTS participants design
ed, constructed and tested work
ing models of such devices as
windmills, catapults, support
towers and bridges.

a ent ered dish supper on June
11th at First Baptist Church by
Mrs. Herman Greene, Mrs. Bob
Maner and Mrs. Hugh Lan
caster.
Twenty-five guests brought
covered dish meats, vegetables,
salads and desserts to the supper.
The containers that held the
food were presented to the bride
as kitchen shower gifts.
The church fellowship hall
was the scene fo. the party.
Yellow and white cloths were us
ed on the serving table that held
an arrangement of magnolia
leaves and blossoms. Leftovers
from the supper were wrapped
to stock the bride’s freezer.

The Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department will be
sponsoring an all day celebration for all Kings Mountain Citizens on
^turday July 4th. This years celebration is shaping up to be even big
ger and better than last years, with entertainment scheduled for the en
tire family. This years events will start out at 10:110 a.m. with the

MUSIC MAN COMING TO SHELBY-Greater
Shelby Community Theatre will present "The
Music Man" this Friday and Saturday at 8
p.m. and Sunday at
Brown Auditorium.

Course. Concessions will be available throughout the day, with a
special menu planned for the day. Again, the Parks and Recreation
Department has a spectacular Fireworks Extravaganza planned for
lOOO p.m. We hope that everyone will be a piarticipant in our July 4th
Celebration this year, so don’t forget to mark your calendars, ^tur-
day, July 4th at Deal Street Complex. Its a day you won’t want to
miss!
