Summer Busy Time
REPLACING LOCKERS - Summw te th«
busiMt time oi the year for the Kings Moun
tain Schools maintenance department.
Employees perform duties which they ore not
able to do while school is in session. Eddie

ment employee, and a summer assistant are

Mountain Senior High.

spring of 1982, every classroom
in the school system will be air
conditioned. Four classrooms,
hallways, and offices received
replacement carpet this summer.
These improvements have
been achieved through the ef
forts of many maintenance and
custodial employees. Robert
Seism assumed his role as direc
tor of maintenance for the Kings
Mountain School System in
1978. Under his leadership,
maintenance and custodial ser
vices have steadily improved.
Assuming responsibility for
the care and operation of eleven
campuses and numerous
buildings is certainly a challenge.
This challenge is being met head
on by a dedicated team of hard
working employees.
Cool boilings in summer and
warm buildings in winter are
taken somewhat for granted un
til a boiler or air conditioner
shuts down. The maintenance
staff must be on call 24 hours.^
day to respond to any and all
emergency calls that might be
received.
The schools maintenance staff
has proven their effectiveness
many times as they respond to
the needs of all schools and to
the different facets of the total
program.
The maintenance and
custodial staff of each school is
to be commended for a job well
done. The magnitude of the task
is by no means small. Renova
tions, repairs and necessary
cleaning responsibilities provide
the job description necessary for
each of the employees as they
perform their assignments
regularly.
The very conservative alloca
tion of funds received by the
Kings Mountain District Schools
may influence the availability of
funds for maintenance and
custodial services. It is an-
ticifiated however, that savings
in energy use and other areas

may offset the decreased funding
and not interfere with the facili
ty care and maintenance. The
maintenance staff along with all
other school personnel will be
striving to eliminate energy
waste and provide the necessary
savings.
The skill level of the
maintenance staff is clearly ex
emplified by the fact that very
little contract work is issued to
the bid process. Many times, the
shear work load and time allot
ment influences whether a pro
ject is contracted or completed
by the Kings Mountain staff.

National
Convention
Connie Phifer, president of
the Kings .Mountain unit of the
North Carolina Association of
Educators, was a delegate to the
National Education Association
convention July 2-7 at Min
neapolis, Minn.
The theme of the convention
was “Public Education:
America’s Strength.”
‘The NEA Convention was a
terrific learning experience,” she
said. “We had two excellent
keynote speakers, George
McGovern and Charles Bolden.
They praised the public educa
tion system in America.”
North Carolina received an
award for the highest percent in
crease in membership in the na
tion.
Grover
Approves
More Bids
Grover Town Council voted
in a special meeting Monday
night at Town Hall to receive
three additional bids on a new
Police Department building
which was approved at last
week’s board meeting.
The board last week approved
constructing a new PD onto the
side of the Grover Fire Depart
ment. The only bid received at
that time was for $17,780.
Commissioners Quay Moss
and Edward Philbeck were ap
pointed by Mayor Bill McCarter
to receive the additional bids.
The board also approved ad
ding five feet to the existing
plans and the addition of a rest
room.
The building is to house the
three-man police deptartment
(two full-time officers and one
reserve) and a storage room for
Town Hall.
in another matter Monday,
the board agreed to hold a
meeting with Charlie Harry of
Grover Industries, which has re- ,
quested that a portion of Maple
Avenue be closed to allow the in-'
dustry to expand its facilities.
The board wants Harry to
give it definite plans for expan
sion and to come to an agree
ment on who would be responsi
ble for re-routeing water and gas
lines.
The meeting will probably be
scheduled as a workshop.
