Foote Earnings Up
Foote Mineral Company
reported net earnings of
$3,078,000 for the third quarter
of 1981 compared with
$386,000 for the same period of
1980. After provision of
$238,000 for preferred
dividends, earnings per common
share were $0.40 compared to
$0.02 per share a year ago. Sales
were $46.3 million compared
with $36.7 million in the 1980
quarter.
Nine months’ net earnings in
1981 were $7,665,000, or $0.97
per common share, compared
with $5,025,000, or $0.60 per
share, in the same period of
1980. Sales were $146.6 million
compared with $122.2 million in
the 1980 period.
E.P. Comer, President and
Chief Executive Officer, said the
increase in net earnings in the
1981 third quarter reflects the
adjustment of inventory levels in
line with current economic con
ditions, the increased sales and
improved plant operations.

CHAPEL HILL—John Knox
McGill, of Kings Mountain, a
third-year law student at the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, has received the
1981 Touche Ross & Co.
scholarship.
The $1,000 scholarship is
awarded annually by the Touche
Ross & Co. accounting firm to a
rising third-year law student who
is a certified public accountant
or who has a strong interest in
tax and business law. McGill is
enrolled in a program leading to
degrees in both law and business
administration.
McGill has served as an intern
with the tax department of Ar
thur Young & Co., CPAs, of
Charlotte, and as a tax law in
tern with Garland and Alala, At
torneys, of Gastonia.
He is a member of the N.C.
Association of Certified Public
Accountants and the National
Association of Accountants. He
is also a licensed N.C. real estate
broker.
McGill earned his
undergraduate degree from Er-
skine College in South Carolina.
Gaston Sets Seminars
DALLAS, A series of
seminars for persons interested
in starting their own business or
operating their own business will
be presented by successful
business managers on Tuesday
and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
beginning November 3, at
Gaston College.
Topics which will be covered
are: Forecasting Profits and
Cash Flow, Sales Marketing and
Distribution, Common Tax Con
sideration, Managing for Profits,
and Computers for Small
Business. The registration fee is
$8.00.
One of the lecturers for the
seminar is John A. Wixon, CDP,
CDE. Wixon’s career in the in
formation systems field has span
ned aperiod of 15 years, during
which time he has served
business and education as a
systems researcher, developer,
designer, teacher and consultant.
He has held positions in Com
puter Research and Systems
Design with Bell Telephone
Laboratories, Management Ad
visory Services with A.M. Pullen
and Company, Management In
formation Systems with Salem
Carpet Mills, and Management
Advisory Services with Cherry,
Bekaert and Holland. In his pre
sent capacity, he consults with a
wide range of business clients,
providing assistance in acquiring
computer solutions for informa
tion systems. Concurrent with
these activities, he served on the
faculty at Guilford College for
eight years, Belmont Abbey Col
lege for two years, and is cur
rently lecturing at Sacred Heart
College. During this time, he has
developed and taught a wide
range of computer-related
seminars and workshops for the
North Carolina Association of
CPA’s, as well as preparing
numerous talks before local,
state and national organizations
on computer-related topics.
Wixon’s undergraduate
background includes Mechanical
Engineering, Mathematics,
Statistics and Accounting with
major studies at the University
Beer Steins
On Display
New in the Collector’s Corner
exhibit on the main floor of the
Cleveland County Historical
Museum is a collection of Ger
man Beer Steins. Collected by
retired Air Force Master
Sergeant J.B. Freeman after
WWII, the beer steins date from
the late 1800’s through WWII.
They include not only the
typical “beer hall” type of stein
and the classic blue glaze steins,
but also porcelain ones and a
unique wooden stein made from
birch bark.
The Collector’s Corner is a
special exhibit of the museum
and features collections of
Cleveland County people. If you
have a collection you would like
to have exhibited, please contact
the museum at 482-8186.
