:Pag« BA KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thunday. Novambw S, 1981 By 'vj JOHN LEHTI WE DO nr EVERY NIGHT OF OUR LIVES, WITHOUT EV^THINKING ABOUT IT-BUT, ^ IN BIBLICAL TIMES, IT COULD HAVE A V VERY SERIOUS '^connotation! THE TAKING OFF OF A SHOE IN BIBLICAL TKAES WAS THE SIGN A WAN USEP TO SHOW THAT HE WAS NOT WILLING TO WAKE A PEAP BROTHERS WIPOW HIS WIFE—THIS WAS A LEVIRATE PUTV WHICH EN- ABLEP THE PEAP MAN'S NAME TO BE KEPT ALIVE IN ISRAEL, FOR THE FIRST SON OF THIS UNION WOULP BE COUNTEP AS THE PEAP MAN'S SON ANP WOULP RE CEIVE HIS INHERITANCE. BOAZ, A NEAR-KINSMAN OF THE WIDOW RUTH (RUTH A< 1-14) WISHED TO MARRY HER BUT THERE WAS A NEARER KINSMAN TO WHOM THE PRIVILEGE BELONGED. HOWEVER,THIS MAN WAS UNWILLING ANP,IN THE PRESENCE OFTEN ELPERS AS WITNESSES, HE TOOK OFF HIS SHOE AND GAVE IT TO BOAZ, SHOWING HE DIDN'T WISH TO "STAND IN THE SHOES OF THE PEAP MAN",THUS BOAZ WAS FREE TO MARRY RUTH AS NEXT OF KIN,WHICH RESOLVED THE MATTER HAPPILY HOWEVER.... Missionary To Speak At East Gold Church IL ' T y' f-- i ...IT PIDNT always work out AS EASILY AS THAT.' THE LAW, AS STATED IN DEliT.2S-5-IO, HELP THAT A BROTHER OR NEAREST OF KIN WAS OUTY-eoUNP TO TAKE HIS BROTHER'S WIDOW TO WIFE IF THE BROTHER DIED CHILDLESS (IF THE WIPOW HAD CHILDREN,THEY HAD TO CARE FOR HER IN HER OLD AGE). NOW, IF A MAN REFUSE TO TAKE HIS BROTHER'S CHILDLESS WIDOW AS A WIFE, THEN, BEFORE THE ASSEMBLAGE OF THE TRIBE SHE WOULD "LOOSE HIS SHOE FROM OFF HIS FOOT, ANP SPIT IN HIS FACE'', BECAUSE THE CULPRIT WOULDN'T DO HIS DOTY TO HIS C?EAP BROTHER BY GIVING HIM A LIVING SON ! HIS NAME WOULP THEN BE KNOWN THROUGHOUT ISRAEL AS‘THE HOUSE OF HIM THAT HATH HIS SHOE LOOSED". SOTO REFUSE THIS DUTY WAS A MARK OF SHAME TO THESE ANCIENT PEOPLE—BEFORE A MAN DIP THAT, HE'D BE BETTER TO- IN THE JARGON OF TODAY'S YOUNG PEOPLE—"COOL IT WITH THAT SHOE, AAAN!" TTTj Stephen Ullom, missionary of The Wesleyan Church to Sierra l.eone. West Africa, will speak at 700 p.m., Tuesday at the East Gold Wesleyan Church, 610 East Cold Street, Kings Moun tain. A graduate of Bartlesville Wesleyan College, Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Bethany Nazarene College, Bethany, Oklahoma. Ullom received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1973. In October, 1978, the Ullom family went to Sierra Leon for a term of missionary service. Here Steve made a valuable and much-appreciated contribution to the growing evangelistic, medical, Bible College and day school work by suing his abilities as a construction and mechanical engineer. Experience gained in construction work and in assisting in local church ac tivities in the homeland proved to be an important asset to his ef fectiveness as a missionary. Ullom will tell about his work in this interesting country of West Africa and of the people and growth of the church. Curios will be on display. The Wesleyan Church serves 32 countries, including Canada, Great Britain and the United States. While the major em phasis in the overseas outreach of the church is placed on gospel evangelism, an extensive medical and educational program has been carried on by the denomination in many areas of this worldwide gospel enterprise. Bible Colleges and training schools are given major em- o -1 sv STEPHEN UUOM phasis in the effort to prepare na tionals for the ministry and other leadership positions.
