Port visits were made to Palma De Mallorca; Spain; Perth, Australia and Singapore. Elliott Scholarship Established At G-W BOILING SPRINGS—A scholarship in honor of Mrs. Et ta M. Elliott, the wife of former Gardner-Webb College Presi dent Philip L. Elliott, has been established at the College. The scholarship has been initially en dowed with a grant of $10,000. Priority will be shown in awar ding the scholarship to students interested in careers related to the fine and performing arts. it is expected that friends and former students will contribute to the scholarship in the future. Craven E. Williams, president of Gardner-Webb College, com mented, ‘This scholarship is an appropriate means of honoring an individual who has been so in fluential in shaping the direction for this College. The elliotts are the key architects of the Gardner-Webb that we know to day.” Mrs. Elliott, known as an avid reader, artist, culinary expert, and seamstress, served with her husband as he led Gardner- Webb College during his presidency from 1943-61. Dr. Elliott’s community-service con cept of education made Gardner- Webb distinctive among small liberal arts colleges. In 1946, the College was admitted to the Bap tist family of Colleges in N.C. on the condition that by Novemer 1948, the friends of the institu tion raise $750,000 for buidings and $250,000 for endowment. With the Elliott’s leadership this goal was met. At the time of Dr. elliott’s death, the enrollment had grown to 600 students and the campus was valued at $3,000,000. Mrs. Elliott, and her husband had four children, Phil Elliott, Mrs. Bennett Initiated Karla R. Bennett of Kings Mountain was one of 57 students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte recently initiated into the cam pus chapter of the Honor Socie ty of Phi Kappa Phi. The students were inducted December 10 in a ceremony at Cone Center on the UNCC cam pus. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, James H. Wemtz, was the speaker. The primary objective of the national Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the recognition and encouragement of superior scholarship in all academic disciplines. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine at Orono, there are now 230 chapters in the United States, the Philippines and Puerto Rico with more than 370,000 members.
