JULY Atlanta Hawks star John Drew participated in a youth basketball camp at the Kings Mountain Community Center. Five members of the Kings Mountain Youth Wrestling Club won their division title in the National Tournament at Hickory. They included Jerry Jordan, Tim Hamrick, Derek Jordan, Vince Sullens and Rodrick Boyce. Johnny Gamble was the first golfer from Kings Mountain to qualify for the North-South Amateur in Charlotte. Sammy Wolfe and Junior Wilson won the Kings Mountain Country Club Member-Guest Golf Tournament. Greg Richardson was named assistant football coach at KMHS. AUGUST Nancy Scoggins was named girls basketball coach at KMHS. East Asheville defeated Kings Mountain for the State Senior Babe Ruth baseball title and went on to win the Southeast Regionals and qualify for the na tional tournament. Gary Powers joined the KMHS football coaching staff. Stoney Jackson won the regular member division and Mickey Powers won the honorary member division in the Legion Golf Tournament. SEPTEMBER Toby Williams stepped down after 35 years as P.A. an nouncer for the KMHS football games. Kathy Tate scored 20 for Ash brook. The two wins in the West tourney gave the Mountainettes a 5-6 overall record. They are 3-3 in SWe action and are idle until next Tuesday night when they host Shelby. Kings Mountain’s Moun taineers upset South Point 6-0 to end a six-game football losing streak and begin a three-game winning streak. Kings Mountain High’s girls tennis team finished second to Shelby in the SWC. Mayor John Moss was guest of Major League Baseball Com missioner Bowie Kuhn for the fifth game of the World Series at Dodger Stadium. NOVEMBER KMHS girls tennis players Karen Ledford and Pat Davis finished third in the sectional tournament at Shelby to qualify for the regional prep tourney at Hickory. Shelby came from behind in the fourth quarter to edge the Mounties 13-7 in the final foot ball game and break Kings Mountain’s three-game winning streak. Stoney jakeson won the coveted Barnes trophy and Johnny Gamble won the Dr. Phillip Padgett trophy at the an nual Ray Barnes Banquet at Kings Mountain Country Club. Gary Allen and Carlos Owens were named to the All- Southwestern Conference foot ball tarn and Tammy Bolton was named to the All-Conference volleyball team. DECEMBER Kings Mountain’s Kevin Mack helped lead Clemson’s Tigers to an 11 -0 regular season record and the top ranking among the major college football teams. The Tigers face Nebraska in the Orange Bowl and battle for the national championship Friday night. Bert Long was named most valuable player gp tlje, 198), KMHS football team. Charlie (Choo Choo) Justice was the guest speaker at the football ban quet. Kings Mountain’s Moun taineers, favorites to win the SWC b^ketball title for the se cond straight year, were upset by R-S Central 65-64 in the opening conference game. Karen Ledford and Pat Davis was named to the All- Conference and All-Gazetteland tennis teams and Ed Guy of the Mounties was named Gazet- teland Coach of the Year. Kings Mountain’s girls basket ball team finished third in the West Mecklenburg Christmas Tournament and Trina Hamrick of the Mountainettes was named to the All-Tournament team. First Wesleyan, First Baptist Undefeated In Church League First Wesleyan and First Bap tist remain undefeated in Tues day Night Church League basketball action last week, and El Bethel captured its first win of the season. First Wesleyan defeated East Gold Street Wesleyan 5741 as Jody Deaton scored 18 points. S. Buchanan scored 19 for the losers, who fell to 1 -1. Doug Stover scored 12 points to lead First Baptist to a tough 5148 win over David Baptist. David Bolin scored 14 for the losers. Don Sessons, Bill Allbright and Jim Grayson scored 10 [toints each to lead El Bethel over First Presbyterian, 48-36. Parks Neisler scored 13 for the losers. The standings after two weeks Bass Club Tourney Held The Cleveland County Bass Club held its December tourna ment recently at Fishing Creek Lake. Fourteen members fished. John Rankin of Shelby won first place honors and Tom Mayhew of Shelby finished second. For the year, Mike Seawright of Kings Mountain was first in the overall point standings. John Rankin was second and Gary Smart third. Arnold Ledford of Shelby caught the largest bass of the year, six pounds and one ounce.
