<'* rit i ' i I' rti ) Nt ]c KMHS Baseball Team Young Kings Mountain High’s veteran baseball coach, Barry Gibson, will Held one of his youngest teams ever this spring, but, as usual, expects to be com- petitive in the rugged Southwestern 3-A Conference. Gibson has 10 sophomores and only five seniors on his 22-man roster. The Mounties open the season on March 9 with a non<onference game against 4-A Hunter Huss and begin SWC action on March 16 at R-S Central. “Well be young and inex perienced,” says Gibson, “but all of our players have been work ing hard. I hope to see continued improvement throughout the season.” Gibson returns four full-time and one part-time starter from last year’s 7-8 team. Heading that list is All-Conference center- fielder Robert Anderson, who led the team in hitting with a .388 figure and should rank among the top hitters in the area. Another All-Conference returnee is outfielder Terry Bullock, another .300 hitter. Others who started full time last year are catcher Leard Keeter and infielder Brent Bell. Out fielder Jeff Moss was a part-time starter. Gibson will have to rebuild his entire pitching staff and the right side of his infield. He lost his en tire mound staff-including most valuable player Todd Blalock -■ I’-*" ■ ROBERT ANDERSON know my money is safe and my income is keeping pace with inflation.” 17.05% "I invest in Ginnie Mae's., high yield mortgage bal ked securities issued by the Government National Mortgage Association. Most of his pitchers will probably play another position when not on the mound. Anderson will likely see some mound action, as well as Keeter, who was the starting catcher last year. Sophomore John Yarbro will probably backup Keeter behind the plate and catch when Keeter is on the mound. Other hurlers include Eric Ballew, Tommy Batchler, Tony Childers, Jerry McDaniel, Barry Philbeck and Randy Whitaker. Other team members include Skip Birskovich, Chris Cham pion, Mark Champion, Todd Cloninger, Kevin Echols, Pat Melton, ^ad Reynolds, Quin ton Rikard, Eric Spicer and Russell Van Dyke. KM Schools Participating In Program The Kings Mountain Schools are participating in a one-year program, sponsored by the NC Alternative Energy Corporation and the State Board of Educa tion, to study options designed to cut electric power costs. Kings Mountain Junior High School is one of S6 schools selected as a demonstration pro ject. Larry Allen, Assistant Superintendent, is serving as the project coordinator and Charles Ramsey, has been named as the technical coordinator for the Kings Mountain Schools. J. Fred Withers, junior high principal, and his staff make up the re mainder of the local team that will be working closely with state field coordinators. Together they will initiate and implement an Electrical Load Management Program for the school, designed to save energy dollars. Various methods are avaialble for use in cutting costs, including some that require little or no ex pense. Management measures such as shifting loads, heating water at night, some reschedul ing of food preparation, monitor ing electric power use, and cut ting bapk on usage will be under consideration. Electric rates play an im- porant part in determining the size of monthly power bills. Cost projections will be included among the in-depth studies to determine the desirability of switching to a different available rate schedule or remaining on the current schedule. The program is being con ducted throughout North Carolina but only S6 school units will be involved, each with one school participating. Kings Mountain Junior High School will serve as a pilot and model for other schools. The program is voluntary, and all participating 'schools have been selected because local school people have shown a desire to reduce electric power costs. Three members of the varsity basketball team-David Peeler, Phillip Campbell and David Looney-will join the team at the end of the basketball season. Gibson, who has won the SWC Coach of the Year Award more times (four) than any other coach in the league, looks to East Gaston and East Ruther ford as the teams to beat. The Mounties will compete in the Eastern Division of the split SWC with East Gaston, South Point, North Gaston and Shelby. East Rutherford, Burns, Crest, Chase and R-S Central will again comprise the Western Division. The top two finishers from each division will advance to the conference playoffs, and the winner of those bestK)f-three series will go to the stale 3-A playoffs.
