Cavaliers Knock KM
Out Of Tie For First
Kings Mountain’s .Moun
taineers were knocked out of a
share of the Southwestern Con
ference Eastern Division lead
Friday night at Lancaster Field
when they fell to East Ruther
ford’s Cavaliers, 164.
The loss left ihe Mounties at
4-2 in the conference and in a tie
for second place with Shelby and
South Point. East Gaston took
over sole possession of first palce
with a 5-1 record.
Kings Mountain held the lead
at 3-2 after three innings, but the
Cavalier bats came to life in the
fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The visitors struck for six runs in
the fourth off KM relief pitchers
David Looney and Tommy Bat
chler, added three more in the
fifth and five in the sixth.
All four of the Mountaineer
runs were driven in by senior
standout Robert Anderson, who
slammed a three-run homer in
the third and plated the fourth
run with a sacrifice fly in the
fifth. He was officially 2-for-2 for
the night. The homer was his
third of the year.
Righthander Leard Keeter
worked the first three innings for
the Mounties. Looney, Batchler,
Anderson and Phillip Campbell
pitched in relief.
Benji Camp went the route for
the Cavaliers, scattering six hits.
East Rutherford collected 13 hits
and also took advantage of six
KM errors. Chuck Surratt was
3-for4, including a homer, and
Camp was 2-for4, including a
homer, for the Cavaliers.
John Yarbro’s walk, Terry
Bullock’s sacrifice and an East
Rutherford error set the stage
for Anderson’s three-run homer
in the third, which erased a 2-0
East lead and put KM on top for
the only time.
Back-to-back walks to Bulkx-k
and Brent Bell, and an infield out
set the stage for Anderson’s
sacrifice fly to deep centerlield in
the fifth.
The Mounties arc scheduled
to host East Gaston Friday and
North Gaston Tuesday. The
game originally scheduled for
Fri., Apr. 16 at Shelby has been
moved to Wed., April 14 at 7:30
