Coach Ed Guy’s charges lost their opening conference match to Shelby, 9-0, and lost non conference decisions to Newton- Conover 5-4 and Charlotte Latin’s B team, 5-1. The Latin match was called after singles ac tion because of rain. The Mounties were scheduled to face East Gaston yesterday and they face West Lincoln on the road today. KM Baseball Team Falls 3-2 Tuesday Kings Mountain’s Moun taineers dropped their second straight game Tuesday after noon in Belmont, falling 3-2 to South Point in a key Eastern Division contest. The loss droppted the Moun- lies to 4-3 and out of a tie with South Point and Shelby for se cond place in the division. The Mounties held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth, when the Raiders scored all three of their runs on two RBI singles and an error. Tommy Batchler went the distance for KMHS. He was working on a two-hitter until the fifth and finished with a five- hitter. Marshall Willis went the route for the Raiders. He scat tered eight hits, fanned 10 and struck out the side twice. The Mounties twice left the bases loaded and left nine men on for the game. Robert Ander son, Kevin Echols and Terry Bullock led the hitting with two hits each. Echols scored on Mark Cham pion’s single to give the Moun ties a 1-0 edge in the fourth, and Bullock scored on an infield hit by Anderson to make it 2-0 in the top of the fifth. RBI singles by Brian Huff- stetler and Jeff Spargo and an er ror following Spargo’s hit ac counted for the winning runs for South Point in the bottom of the fifth. The Munties return home Fri day to host East Gaston at 7:30, and North Gaston comes to Lan caster Field next Tuesday at 7:30. Susie Moore hurled the vic tory, scattering 13 hits. The Lady Patriots committed six er rors. Leanne Gann led the KM plate attack with 4-for4 and Joanna Boheler and Sylvia White hit home runs. The KM girls travel to East McDowell Thursday. April 8. 1982-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Pag. 9A Cavaliers Knock KM Out Of Tie For First Kings Mountain’s .Moun taineers were knocked out of a share of the Southwestern Con ference Eastern Division lead Friday night at Lancaster Field when they fell to East Ruther ford’s Cavaliers, 164. The loss left ihe Mounties at 4-2 in the conference and in a tie for second place with Shelby and South Point. East Gaston took over sole possession of first palce with a 5-1 record. Kings Mountain held the lead at 3-2 after three innings, but the Cavalier bats came to life in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The visitors struck for six runs in the fourth off KM relief pitchers David Looney and Tommy Bat chler, added three more in the fifth and five in the sixth. All four of the Mountaineer runs were driven in by senior standout Robert Anderson, who slammed a three-run homer in the third and plated the fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. He was officially 2-for-2 for the night. The homer was his third of the year. Righthander Leard Keeter worked the first three innings for the Mounties. Looney, Batchler, Anderson and Phillip Campbell pitched in relief. Benji Camp went the route for the Cavaliers, scattering six hits. East Rutherford collected 13 hits and also took advantage of six KM errors. Chuck Surratt was 3-for4, including a homer, and Camp was 2-for4, including a homer, for the Cavaliers. John Yarbro’s walk, Terry Bullock’s sacrifice and an East Rutherford error set the stage for Anderson’s three-run homer in the third, which erased a 2-0 East lead and put KM on top for the only time. Back-to-back walks to Bulkx-k and Brent Bell, and an infield out set the stage for Anderson’s sacrifice fly to deep centerlield in the fifth.
