Add another in a long list of
honors for Kings Mountain
High basketball standout, Carl
Smith.
The 6-0, senior 'point guard
this week was named to the
West all-star team for the annual
East-West Game to be played in
July in Greensboro.
Smith is the third KMHS per
former to make the team.
George Adams, who later star
red at Gardner-Webb and in the
American Basketball Associa
tion, was on the 1968 team and
Otis Cole, who later starred on
the Florida State team which
finished second to UCLA in the
NCAA tournament, played on
the 1970 team.
Smith, a two-time Player of
the Year in the Southwestern
3-A Conference, led the Moun
taineers to a 51 -4 record over the
past two years and two SWC
titles. He was a three-year starter
and averaged 19 points, five
assists and three points per game
his senior year. He scored over
1,000 points during his career.
‘There are a lot of good
players out there, so I consider it
a real honor to be selected to the
all-star game,” said Smith.
In addition to being selected
the SWC Player of the Year two
years running. Smith has been
All-Conference twice, All-
Piedmont twice, All-Gazetteland
twice, Gazetteland Player of the
Year twice and team most
valuable player last year.
He is the school's most highly-
recruited basketball player since
Adams and Cole, and says he
should be ready to make a deci
sion about his future within a
week.
