May 6. 1982 KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Pag* 3A Batchler’s One-Hitter Stops East In Finale Kings Mountain’s Moun taineers failed to make the playoffs in the Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball race this spring, but they made pre-season favorite East Gaston’s road to the playoffs a tough one. Getting no-hit pitching from Tommy Baichler for six and two-thirds innings Wednesday, the Mounties knocked off the talented Warriors, 5-1, forcing a lie for second place between the Warriors and Shelby. East Gaston defeated Shelby in a special one-game playoff Thurs day to advance to the SWC playoffs along with South Point of the Eastern Division and Crest and Chase from the West. Baichler, who walked only one man and struck out three, had two men out and two strikes on East third baseman Greg Rhyne in the seventh. But Rhyne laced an 0-2 pitch to ccnierfield to end Batchler’s hopes of a no-hiiter. “I hated to see him lose the no- hiiier,” said Coach Barry Gib son, “but he pitched a real fine ballgame.” Baichler retired the first 13 men he faced before Rhyne reached on an error in the fifth. He then issued his only walk in the sixth before giving up the single to Rhyne in the seventh. Following that hit, the Mounties committed two straight errors to give the Warriors their onl\ tiin of the game. Brent Bell gave the Mounties a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when he slammed a 1-0 pitch over the fence for a home run. The Mounties made it 2-0 in the third when Baichler walked and later scored on Bell’s sacrifice fly and the lead went to 3-0 in the fourth when Mark Champion singled, stole second and scored on a single by Brad Reynolds. KM’s final two runs came in the seventh on a single by Terry Bullock, Bell’s sacrifice, an intentional walk to Robert Anderson and Champion’s single.
