THURSDAY, MARCH 14, FOURTH GRADE HEARS RADIO PROGRAM Our class has been listening to a radio program for a little over a month. The name of the program is Columbia's American School of the Air. We listen on Taesdavs and Thursdays. On Tuesdays we hear a 'musical p.ogram. On Thursdays we hear Talcs from Far and Near. We are enjoying the program very much. Bobby Davidson Fourth Grade, South School OUR HEALTH CLUB We are just beginning a study of "Health in our com munity". We decided to have a Health Club. We have pictures up in our room about health. We brought books ar.d pictures about Health. We have a Presi dent, a Vice President, a Secre tary and a Treasurer. The President is Davis McLelland. the Secretary is Alice McNeely and the Treasurer is Max Bran non. Committees tfiave been chosen to make plans for our club meetings. Joan Johnston, Alice Mae McNeely Fourth Grade South SchoJ A BICYCLE TRIP Bob Carpenter and Junior Brannon rode twenty-two miles on a bicycle. We iode from ten o'clock to two o'clock that af ternoon. We met Buck Over cash and Jet Dortor.. ' Tl-.ey were going to Landis to sec Jet's grandmother. On our way home we stopped and rode two horses. After going to see Jun ior's brother we came heme. Bob Carpenter Fourth Grade, South School CLEANLINESS CLUB The children in Miss Krider's room have organized a "Clean liness Club". We have made a pledge for our "Cleanliness Club". We have pledged our selves to keep ourselves clean, to help keep our school room clean and to help keep our homes clean. We all try to come to school clean. Many girls and boys are trying tc help their Mothers to keep their homes clean. Some sweep and others dust and do other things. Gene, Edward, Clyde, Raymond, Don, Elsie, Burlise and Willie and Grover all raked their yards for their Mothers. We are working for Cleanliness. Betty Hcoks Fourth Gade South School OUR FIRST AID STUDY At the beginning of schcol some of our classmates got hurt. We thought that we should have a First Aid room. Miss Greenlee let us use the Drugs and Sundries i THE costume room. Everybody was interested In it and came theie wh n they got hurt. Mrs. Murff told us more a bout Fi:s: Aid because she has taught it. Soon when the medicine got iOw we won a P. T. A. prize and bought new supp'ies. Someone noticed that you could gtt a small Fiist Aid Kit with popicle bags. We col lected them and sent for that. We got cotton, gauze, band ages, adhesive tape, and mer curochrome in it. Miss F.eezt and Mrs. Pric;- gave us hot water bottles. Mias G.eenloe found us same blank-ts for our cot. We have had over twenty five parents since we started. Jean McNeely Fifth Grade, South School OUR ACTIVITY PERIOD In cur activity period for the past two weeks we have been drawing a picture sl:ow of the building of our nation. We se lected committees to draw the each scene. They planned and drew the scenes and each day at the check-up period we gave them criticism and suggestions. If the committees couldn't use these suggestions they did their best and asked for more sug gestions the next day. We al ways tried to gwe helpful suggestions. We finished the scenes Mon day and placed them over the front blackboard. They make our room bright ar.d cheerful. We are enjoying them very much already. The scenes that I like best are the Winter at Valley Forge and the statue of the Minute Man at Concord, Massachu setts. We are having interesting activity periods ar.d we all en joy it very mcch. Claude Voils Howard Price .Fifth Grade, South Schcoi HISTORY IS FUN History is fun when you study il the right way. On Washington's Birthday, the children in Miss Windfield's room gave a play. Conrad Johnston planned the play and chose the characters. We prac ticed one time at his houi;e. We didn't practice much but v.e did have scme fun. The main scene s'.;owed Washing taking command of the United- States Army. Conrad brought his sound ef fect studio that he pot for Christmas and made sounds for us. After the play Conrad mad.' all the sounds he could make. We gave the play four times. I liked to give it to the litt e folks be-t. They seemed more interested than big pt'0.-,l?. Eugene NeLon Fifth Grade, South School STUDY OF NORTH CAROLINA'S INTERESTING PEOPLE While studying the h'story of North Carolina, our sixth grade at South School became inter ested ii' the Important people of North Carolina, such as ar tist, writers, musicians, and poets. We did not know there wre so many who were so very Interesting until we studied -hem. We are so proud of them that we want others to know of them. We hope they will be as 'nteresting to yau as they are to us. Lorraine Walker Sixth Grade, South School OUR VISIT TO THE COTTON GIN Our grade visited the cotton gin this morning. Mr. Honey cutt and Kfr. Eelk showed us around. He said that a long time ago the people carried tl.e oUon into the pir. in baskets, now the air sucks the cotton nto a pipe from the waaon. We saw the circular saw t'lot nits the seeds from the fiber. They con't use brushes to get '.he cotton off the saws, now he air blows it off. We saw how the cotton is pres ed Into Dales. The cotton is wrapped In sacks and has iron bands a- NEWS LEADER, Mooresville, round it. AH the cotton ginned in Mooresville is upland cotton. Jute burlap and cotton bag ging are used in bailing. Billy Sinclair Fifth Grade, South Schocl SELECTION AD ARRANGEMENT OF PICTURES Last fEl'i ,our iclass became cry much interested in pie lures. I gu ss We have studied about one hun.rd pictures in all. We not only found cut a cout the pictures end the ar tist's life but also something about se'ection and arrange m n; oi' pictures. During this study we feund plenty of material in the school ;nd city libraries which helped us with that work. We also made visits to stores and homes. Miss Greenlee bought us a beautiful art book "World Fam ous Paintings" with money we raised during book week. We are very proud of this book. It contains one hundiei master pieces, all in color. ,Our class has been and is still enjoying this study. Betty Stiles Fifth Grade, South School .ELLIS CREDLE TOWNSEND. Ellis Credle is a story teller, an aitist, a musician, and a writer. When she first started writing books they would not publish them. She would write and rewrite them but the pub lishers would send them back without a comment. Her fi.st book that was published was "Dawn Down the Moun.a'n". Others she wrcte was .' Little Jeemes Henry" and "Across the Cotton Patch". She draws pic tures which makes them more interesting. She used to be a teacheir 'and was teaching at Forest City, N. C. when she wrote "Dawn Down the Moun tain". After she quit teaching, she began to give all her time to writing and traveled a lot. On one c.t her ;yges she met Mr. Townsend. Later they were married. They now have one son Richard. Ellis has a trailer where she does her work. She makes notes of tilings and hangs them up on a line with clothes pins. In her bocks she is knowr. as Ellis Credle, but she is really Mrs. Townseid. She and her family are now living at Beaverdon Valley in Western North Carolina. Peggy Mae Fleming S.xth Grade, South School JACQUES BUSBEE Jaques Busbce is one of the mo-t unique and interesting people of North Carolina. He was a portrait painter. He was sent to Roanoke Island in 1907. to paint the scenes along the coast for the Jamestown ex position. Mr. Bcsbee was a successful artist, but he decided to give up this profession, when he be cams interested in the making of pottery, at the Jugtown com munity. There he and his wife have one of the most Interest ing potteries in the state. Melvin Huffman Sixth Grado, South School OUR PUBLIC LIBRARY Mrs. Clay Williams gave Mooresville a beautiful gift, in the iorm of a library. Mrs. Creswell the librarian is so kind and pleasant and is always eager to help us find material or a story book. Mrs. Mills, the assistant, Ls the same way. There aie many beautiful and Interesting books on the shelves. All the books are ed ucational in some way. I know the Mooresville people will be bette. informed and better ci tizens because of our library. We will always be grateful to Mrs. Williams for this valuable gift. I hope she knows how much we appreciate it and are en joying it. , Nellie Blair Prire Sixth Grads, South School AUGUSTUS LEAZAR, AN EDUCATOR We are making a study of Iredell County in our sixth grade members of my class are interviewing older citizens df our town, and gathering much N. C. information of value. I inter viewed Mrs. Will Lentz to find out about Mr. Augustus Leazar. Mr. Leazar was a prominent educator from our county. He was born in March 1843 at Lea parwell plantation in Rowan County. He went to Davidson College when 14, graduating with first honors in 1860 being only 17 years of age. He taught school from 1866 to 1882. He was elected as a legislator from Ireelell County for three terms j.nd was a member of the House cf Representatives from 1883 to 1S89 being elected speaker oi he House dining his last term. Mr. Leazar was the author oi a bill introduced in the legis lature to establish the North Carolina State College at Ra leigh. Mr. Leazar diod February 18, 1905. We wish we had a sehcol in Mooresville named for Mr. Leaaar, since we e.1o quite proud d him. Nancy McNeely Sixth Grade, Soutn Schoo. FIRST GRADE HOME LIFE We have been readin homes. about We have talked about homes. ou; We have pretty pictures of roms in homes. We decided to bu:ld a house. We talked about how we could get some lumber. Mrs. Williamson's grade gave us some. They did not need it. Clarence helped us saw the lumber. Our house has two rooms. We want to build anothei room. We have windows in our house. We are going to make or bring some furniture fiom oui home for our house. We want to play in it when it is finished. Miss Hunter's 1st grade.
