VOICE DISORDERS
Voice disorders are called, in
the speech correction field, “dys
phonias.” If a complete loss of
voice occurs, it is termed "apho
nia.” “Aphonia” may be caused by
hysteria, or by surgical removal
(laryngectomy) >f the larynx be
cause of cancer.
Voice disorders may be caused
by (1) physical deformities of the
larynx and vocal cords, «.b> a
pathology of the larynx traceable
to disease, and to) misuse of the
vocal hands temporarily or over
leng periods of time.
Temporary abuse of the voice
may be caused by laryngitis, such
as caused by yelling at a football
game. In years gone by, some rur
al ministers have misused their
voices by yelling during preach
ing; along with this, usually, there
is faulty breathing in the inhala
tion of air.
Children can anuse their voices
through yelling vigorously at pla?
Misuse of the voice causes “speak
er’s or singer”s nodules" to a.p
pear on the vocal band and pre
vent their normal vibration. Un
desirable voices have been labels
hoarse, strident, metallis, mono!
onous, flat and nasal.
Female vocal cords averay
five-tweflth of an inch in length
while those of the men averagi
seven-twelfths in length.
