Or. Massie designs NCCPnskknty DURHAM - Dr. Samuel Proc tor Massie resigned his posi tion Wednesday, Jan. 19, as president of North Carolina College during a meeting of the college’s board of trustees. Accepting Massie's resigna tion effective Jun 30, the board granted him a leave of absence with full salary beginning Feb, 1, thanking him for his services to the college and wishing him well in future endeavors. Mas sie, 46, and the third presi dent of the 55 year old Institu tion, did not comment on rea sons for submitting his resigna tion or his plans for the future. Bascom Baynes, chairman of the board, said he plans ap pointing a selection committee soon to make recommendations of persons to fill the $17,000- a-year post by July 1. In the meantime, the board named an interim committee to perform the duties of the presidency beginning Feb. 1 in Dr. Massie’s absence. William Jones, busi ness manager at the college, is chairman. Other members are Dr. HelenG. Edmonds, dean of the graduate school, and Dr. William H. Brown, professor of education and former dean of the graduate school. * Baynes was quoted by a Dur ham newspaper as Indicating later that Massie’s resignation was not entirely unexpected. "I can’t speak for the board as to whether or not his resigna tion was expected. As for my self, It was expected in away. I had heard comments about his possible resignation from others but had heard nothing di rectly from him.” The board meeting and sub sequent developments occurred on the second day of the one week examination period for fall semester classes. Hence, many segments of the campus, on which 2,700 students are enroll ed, were unaware of any unusu al activity.
