He added: “The problem is not limited to the cities list ed. [ New Films Available At Libraries Six films have been added to the North Carolina Adult Film Project and are now available from the Olivia Raney and Rich ard B. Harrison Libraries. These sixteen millimeter films will be lent at no charge other than postage upon two weeks or more prior request at the li brary; they are not available for classroom use in elemen tary and secondary schools. “The Gardens of Winter thur,” pictures flowers at the Dupont estate In Wilmington, Delaware, through the spring and summer seasons. It is a col or film thirteen minutes long. “Prehistoric Image,"shows primitive drawings on the walls of caves in France and Spain. Seventeen minutes long, this film is also In color. “Automania,” 2000 isa color cartoon that projects the year 2000 in which the automobile has been developed so as to be able to reproduce itself. “Instruments of The Orches tra,” takes a symphony orches tra apart, shows all its instru ments, and puts it back together again. It is in black and white and lasts twenty minutes. “The Hutcerites,” is a study of a cooperative religious com munity in Canada that is the di rect descendant of a Christian sect formed during the refor mation. It is twenty minutes long and is in black and white. "Praise The Sea,” is an art film that creates a feeling for the Netherlands through a com bination of visual Images and sounds. It does so in black and white in twenty one minutes. Dr. Dunham is Speaker At Bennett GREENS BORO--The idea of not allowing oneself to become involved is an attitude engraved upon the American conscience, Di. Chadhourne Dunham told the Bennett College vesper au dience on Sunday. The speaker, a memlier of the faculty of Wesleyan University, oi Middleton, Conn., stated that this attitude, however, is not new and gave examples dating from Homer’s Illiad to Dostoev sky's “The Brothers Kara mazov” to Illustrate his thesis. * * * Alain Locke, in 1907, was the first Negro to be selected as a Rhodes Scholar, studying at Oxford, England. Report Soys 3 Out Os 10 Families Negroes NEW YORK, N. Y. About 7 million families in the United States today, according to the Social Security Administration economy index of 1965, live in poverty. Among the reported 10.7 mil lion people in the country, 3 out of 10 are non-white which means that the non-white population-- mainly Negroes -- suffer al most three and a half times more poverty than white peo ple. Hence, as a part of the Na tional Urban League's program this year in coping with the pressing and complex problems created by conditions of pov erty, the League has expanded its professional staff in health and welfare. Dr. Jesse W. Johnson will serve as assistant director in this area, according to an an nouncement made today by Whitney M. Young Jr., the Lea gue’s national executive direc tor. Working under Miss Jewel dean Jones, associate director for Health and Welfare, Dr. Johnson will concentrate his ef forts on mobilizing health and welfare resources in the in terest of aiding the disadvantag ed. Among his duties will be the planning and development of programs as well as providing specialist services to League affiliates in 72 urban areas :hroughout the nation. Dr. Johnson, a 36-year-old native of Natchitoches, L.a., holds a B. A. in applied sociolo gy from Morgan State College and a M, S. W. degree in psychi atric social work from Howard University. He received his doctorate in special education (marriage and family education and administration of social a gencies) from Columbia Uni versity. Prior to joining the NUL staff, Johnson was assistant director of social services at Coney Is land Hospital in New York, and served as a public health field representative with the Altro Health and Rehabilitation Serv ices of New York City. Miss Jones indicated that Dr. Johnson is capable of making a major contribution to the suc cess of health and welfare programs on national, region al, and local levels. He is married and the father of two sons. He lives at [l4- 50 174th St., St. Alban, N. Y. The League, now in its 56th year, is a professional inter racial social work agency es tablished to assist Negro citi zens and members of other dis advantaged minority groups to obtain equal opportunities in employment, housing, education and health and welfare services. |P% MCKISSICK HONORED - Floyd B. McKissick, center, who was recently named national director of CORF, was presented a plrque last week by Durham Chapter of the North Carolina College Alumni Association "feu meritorious service in civil rights.” Making the presentation was his las partner, M. c.
