DEAD FAITH
Nothing in the Bible is stated
more clearly or with greater
emphasis than the blessed Pau
line revelation of justification
by grace, through faith, WITH
OUT WORKS,
Rom. 4:5; "To him that work
eth NOT, but believeth . . . his
faith is counted for righteous
ness.” Fph, 2;8, 3; “For b\
grace are ye saved, through
faith ... It is the gift of
God; NOT of works, lest any
man should boast.” Tit. 3;5:
"NOT b\ works of righteous
ness which we have done, but
according to His mercy He
saved us.”
Yet James states just as
clearly that "faith if it hath
not works is dead, being a
lone” Jas. 3:17). He chal
lenges professing believers:
"Show me thy faith without thy
works, and I-w ill show thee my
faith BY my works” (Ver. 18),
and declares that "by works
a man is justified, and not
by fait!: only” (Ver. 24), since
"faith without works is dead”
(Ver. 20).
Some have imagined a con-,
tradiction here, while actual
ly there is none. There is a
dispen sat tonal distinction, for
to Paul had been committed
‘ 'the dispensation of the grace of
God” (Fph. 3;1, 2). His was "the
preaching of the cross” (I Cor.
1:18), offering salvation by
grace, through faith alone to all

who would trust Christ as
Savior.
James, on the other hand,
was an apostle of the kingdom,
proclaiming the kingdom rights
of Christ and offering a changed
way of life on earth which had
already been experienced by
the disciples in Judaea (Acts
2:29-32, 44-47; 4:32-35).
Hence with James the em
phasis is on works, NOT be
cause good works can save or
even help to save, but because
TRUE faith inevitably bears
FRUIT and WE can judge true
faith only by the fruit it bears.
Our Lord said: "By their fruits
ye shall know them.” Hence
James’ epistle abounds with
such phraseology as "ye see,”
"show me,” "I will show you,”
etc.
What we must be careful to
remember is that according to
both Paul and James, faith
comes first, then good works.
Faith is the root, good works
the fruit. The absence of fruit
indicates that the root is dead,
that while there may be an in
tellectual assent, there is no
true heart faith, and "without
faith it is impossible to please
God” (I-leb. 11:6).
The SOURCE of justification
is grace; the BASIS, Calvary;
the MEANS, faith and the EVI
DENCE, works. Think this
through; accept God’s grace and
trust tin Lord Jesus Christ as
your Savior, He will help you
to produce good fruit.

MEDITATION 5
A SERMONETTE
BY COLIN DOUGLAS
"The stone which the build
ers rejected is become the
head of the corner.” -- Psalms
118:22.
In the course of life there
are many ideas that spring in
to our minds which, when given
full expression, prove to be so
satisfying that we easily recog
nize their divine origin. But
there are also times when we
pray for divine guidance and
inspiration, and the right kind |
of ideas do not seem to be forth
coming.
Whenever this seems to be
the case, we need then to con
sider whether we might possibly
be dismissing some idea that
has come to us as being too
trivial or too insignificant for
consideration. Just for ex
ample, ideas for putting those
around us at ease, for mak
ing a home comfortable, for al
lowing another driver on the
road the right-of-way, or for )
bestowing just a bright smile
on another person . . . these
may not seem of vital impor
tance to us. But certainly,
when given full expression, they
shine forth as rare gifts.
Some of us have no difficulty
in recognizing the good ideas
that come to us, but we lack
the confidence to express them. I
These ideas seem lacking in I
virtue because they are our I
own. If we have this feeling, we gj
need to realize that every good I
and worthwhile idea comes from 1
God, that we are all the physical 9
expressions of God, and that we I
are fulfilling our purpose when |
we give expression to the won- 1
derful ideas He transmits to I
us.
As we accept the thought that,
"This is God’s world, and we
are His children,” happiness
fills our hearts, and we are
inspiried to stir up this same
feeling of happiness in every
other person about us. We look
on life as an exciting challenge,
and we find happiness in every
day and in every situation, for
we >~a\e God’s never-failing
wellspring of happiness with
in us.
"Happy is the people that is
in a case; Happy is the people
whose God is Jehovah.” --
Psalms 114:15.
