Little Laura started her eleventh birthday by posing for a daily newspaper (New York Times) picture with her modern dance class, in the St, James Community House’s School of the Arts. The dance class is taught by Lonar Hodges Mafata (daughter of Duke Ellington’s Band arranger. Johnny Hodges) and the school of arts Is direct ed by the international famous contralto, Dorthory Manor Rooks. Laura's dance class was over at 3 p. m. after which she, at tired in leotards and hat box on arm, rushed home, where she prepared to receive her guests. The group feasted on pop corn, peanuts, candies, frank furters, "a la coney Island,” and unlike their fathers and mothers, the Little men and Little women, quenched their thirst with “unspiked” orange and grape juice. When that was gone as if their little tummies could take more, Little Laura unvieled Ice-cream, chocolate and white Icing birthday cakes, afterwhich her guests went into all kinds of mad versions of the “Boston monkey,” “The Jerk,” and other popular dances. When the party was over, In the “wee hour” of 8 p. m. the ’tween agers had barely touched the home made cookies and Walnut Brownies, given Laura by her paternal grandmother, Mrs. H. Hate Forces White Cleric To Give Up Negro Child FULLERTON, Calif. (NPI) - Watts, in reverse is the way a white minister described ra cist Intolerance which is forc ing him and his wife to put up for re-adoption a two-year old Negro boy they adopted a year ago. The Rev. Albert Cohen, 38, and his wife, Ann, 33, will re turn the boy, David, to the Los Angeles county adoption agency, a short time before they were scheduled to sign final adop tion papers. The minister, a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy and Protestant chaplain, at Cali fornia State College, said they have to give up the child be cause they have been “har rassed, humiliated and threat ened” by persistent telephone calls. Rev. Cohen, who had been given police protection after someone painted “Watts” on the front door of his home, said he was afraid to take David to the store with him because “I can feel and see the resent ment,” The couple, who have four children of their own, report ed that they received a call from a man who told them, “get rid of the nigger or you might find one of your chil chell, and Mrs. Jones. Our guests were Mrs. Leo nia Umphrey, Mrs, Eva Bunch, and Mrs. Beatrice Bennett. We had a few games, and a few riddles, since it was the night for recreation. Members were served a deli cious repast. The food was attractive as well as tasty. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Martha Mitchell, on Bart St. dren gone.” Mrs. Cohen said; “It was all right at first, We though! St would work out even though all our friends, brack and whit-.., told us it wouldn't..” “C-iving up David at one tint • would have been the worst thim; that could happen. Now what’.' happening is worse," the minis ter commented. “We thought we could stand up and be counted, but we just don’t have the personal strength. We found out what Fullerton’s like. “It’s Watts in reverse.” ** * * Although Easter is one of the most solemn Christian, feasts, the names by which it is known often are not Chris tian at all.
