C., SATURDAY, APRIL *, 15*6 me wm Expand Its Offerings DURHAM -- Approximately 150 courses covering a vide range of graduate and under graduate subject-matter fields, special courses in education, and several special workshops and institutes will comprise North Carolina College's sum mer offerings this year, Dr, C. L. Patterson, acting director of the Summer School, announc ed this week. The summer program, which begins June 6, will offer a six-week session, which ends July 14, and a nine-week ses sion, which lasts until August 1. A faculty of 82 persons will consist of regular NCC per sonnel, augmented by 17 visit ing specialists from other in stitutions and school systems. Not included in this total are persons, to be announced later, who will staff three NDEA in stitutes, Patterson said, Among special offerings are a leadership in reading institute, an institute for newer media of instruction, a speech education workshop, and an institute for cooperating teachers -- all sponsored by the Southern Ed ucation Foundation. In addition, the college will sponsor a six-week workshop for teachers of reading and v ill offer special courses for ele mentary teachers of tire “new” mathematics. Employment Opportunities Are Talked GREENSBORO -- Pointing to the multitude of graduate schol arships and fellowships avail able and to the wide range of employment opportunities nov beckoning Dr. Chauncey G. W in ston, acting president, chal lenged students, particularly seniors, to make better use of their time in the days that remain before commencement, in his Senior Day address on Friday, “Use your time fruitfully,” he said, “study harder and com plete your plans for next year -- whether it be a job or grad uate school. I hope that some of you will pursue the doctorate. It would be fine in future years if one of you could qualify to become pi esident of Bennett.” The seniors received their caps and gowns from their sophomore sisters and heard that their present leader in scholarship is Miss Amanda Houston, a mathematics major of Kinston, who has a 2.83 academic average out of a pos sible 3.0 points. Running a close second is Miss Eva Rice, an English major, of Washington, D. C. Following this program, the seniors planted and dedicated a magnolia tree in honor of former president, Dr. Wilia B, Player and later were guests of the sophomores at a ban quet. THE VETERANS CORNER 0 -- How much time remains to obtain the re-opened GI in surance, so-called? A-- Eligible veterans (those with service-connected disabi lities even though they receive no compensation payments and those with nonservice-connect ed disabilities who are too dis abled to obtain commercial in surance) have until midnight, Monday, May 2, 1966 to obtain the re-opened insurance. By that time, however, they must have sent not only their ap plication but also sufficient funds to cover the initial pre mium payment. * * * Q -- Congress has just pass ed a new GI Bill. When does it go into effect!' A-- It became effective im mediately upon signing by the President, In all provisions except those applying to educa tional benefits. These will be come available on June 1, 1966. * * * Q -- I hear my child, age 21, is now entitled to educa tional assistance even though my peacetime service termi nated before 1940. My service connected condition is rated as permanently, totally disabl ing. What would his monthly allowance be if he enters col lege? A —Yes your child became eligible under a recent change in the law extending War Or phans’ Educational Assistance to children, generally between ages 18 and 23, of both war time and peacetime veterans from the beginning of the Spa nish-American War period pro vided their permanent arid total disability or death Is service connected.
