The NCTA Credit Union
A Budding Suuess Story
Slightly more than 41/2 years
ago, predictions were made that
a Negro teachers’ credit union
operating state wide would nev
er be successful. Yet as of
March 10, 1966 assets of the
North Carolina Teachers Asso
ciation Credit Union were
roughly $46,000.00 with about
485 active members. $5.25 is
required to fotn and shares
are $5.00 each thereafter.
For two consecutive years
1964 and 1965, the NCTA Cred
it Union paid 5% dividends and
anticipates continuation of the
5% dividend rate for 1966. In
addition it provides Life In
surance on both shared and
loans to the members at no
cost. There arenomedi
t luslons as long as the
member Is working or In active
service.
Retired teachers, substitute
teachers, teachers aides and
minors may hold savings ac
counts only. Only regularly
employed members may borrow
but there are no racial restric
tions. The credit union attempts
to serve members of the North
Carolina Teachers Association.
The Credit Union Is proud of
the fact that after an aggregate
sum of loans in excess of SIOO,
000.00 during its short history,
only $3.40 has been charged off
as uncollectible to date.
There were 14 pioneers who
dreamed of a million dollar in
stitution to serve some of the
economic needs of NCTA mem
bers. They bought SIOO.OO worth
of shares to become charter
members and many are still
serving in an official capacity.
The immediate goal of $50,000
total assets is now within reach.
The next goal is SIOO,OOO hope
fully within a year.
The Credit Union seeks im
mediately, 25 members to save
$2,000, 50 members to save
SI,OOO, 100 members to save
$500.00, 200 members to save
$250.00 and 500 members to
save SIOO.OO.
For safety and stability, there
are the following:
(1) Blanket bond coverage
10095 of the assets on the treas
urer and all handling credit
union funds up to a million
dollars.
(2) All funds received must
be deposited in the bank.
(3) All funds disbursed must
be by check.
(4) An adequate liquid re
serve fund as protect ion against
operational hazards.
(5) Quarterly audits by state
government.
(6) Proven Loan Policies
safeguarding funds.
Five SNCC
Workers Are
Arrested
NEW YORK - The arrest of
five workers for the Student

a rash of protests by Negroes
aimed at that country’s apart
heid policies and United States
support of the South African
government.
Jailed March 21 after a seven
hour sit-in at the Consulate
offices were SNCC Chairman
John Lewis, SNCC Executive
Secretary James Forman,
SNCC Program Secretary Cle
veland Sellers and SNCC Field
Secretaries Willie Ricks and
William Hall.
They were charged with dis
orderly conduct and trespass
ing. Bond was posted by Hai -
ry Belafonte.
On a return visit the next
day, the SNCC workeis found
the consulate door locked.
March 21 was the sixth an
niversary of the Sharpesville
massacre in which over 150
black Africans were killed or
wounded by policemen after a
nonviolent demonstration a
gainst that country’s rigid seg
regation laws.
On March 23, the South Afri
can consulate refused to grant
a visa to Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. King and Senator Rob
ert Kennedy (D-N. Y.) had been
invited to address integrated
student groups in South Africa.
The loan limit started at
SIOO.OO, moved a SIOO.OO a year
to a normal loan limit now of
SSOO. However, there are sev
eral loans up to $900.00 in force
now and two SI,OOO have been
granted. Special plans for
saving and borrowing are a
vailable October through March
of each year.
