Perry, a North Carolina col lege senior English major from Durham, has been named the student recipient of the col -0% Si " W 4 MISS JOYCE L. PERRY ’ jge’s James E. Shepard Hamil ton Watch Award for 1966. The award will bo conferred > $108,382 Grant Given Winston-Salem State WINSTON-SALEM --Wins ton-Salem State College was awarded a grant of $108,382 by the Office of economic Op portunity (OEO) to operate an Upward Bound Program for a 12-month period beginning March 30, 1966. Dr. w. Archie Blount, vice president of the college and di r> ctor of the program, made the announcement of the grant last week. The grant is one of the first r, 55 made by the OEO to fund program -for disadvan taged youth. It’s purpose is to develop the potential of dis advantaged youth and motivate them to attend college. Two hundred such grants are antic ipated under Title Id-A of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, p "The Program at Winston- Salem State College," Dr. Blount said, "will involve one hundred 10th and 11th grade boys from Winston-Salem an,! Established in 1947 by the Hamilton Watch Company in honor of the late Dr. James E, Shepard, who founded the col lege, the award honors theNCC teacher and student who ‘‘make the most significant contribu tion to the school during the year of the award." Dr. Theo dore R. Speigner, chairman of the college’s Department of Geography, was voted the fac ulty recipient by the faculty, and Miss Perry was chosen following campuswide voting by students. Miss Perry, the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. L. P. Perry of Raleigh, is a graduate of Durham High School, where she was a senior "superlative.” At NCC, she has been basileus of Alpha Chi Chapter of the Al pha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and she is currently president of the Women's Assembly, and a nominee to ""Who's "Who in A merican Colleges and Universi ties”. school year they will receive followup counseling and cul tural and educational activi ties.’’ The staff for the program will number around 20 and they will come from the college and the local secondary schools. No person qualified for the program will be denied par ticipation because of race. Rex Jarrell, assistant di rector along with public school officials and a sub-committee of the advisory committee are now recruiting students for the program. Students who par ticipate will receive a SIO.OO a week stipend during the sum mer and $4.00 a week during the 1966-67 school year.
