This important passage of Scripture is, sad to say, lit tle understood. Many people think of faith in the abstract, as though It were some myster ious power in itself. They speak of faith, but what do they mean? Faith In what? or In whom? Surely i* is not possible Just to have faith, without some thing or someone to have faith in. Faith Is not wishing hard, or feeling confident. Much less is it optimism or presump tion or imagination, T ith must have a basis, a few m i n. Thus the Christian’s faith is i end ed on “the Word of God’’ - on what God has said In the Bible. The above passage explains: “Faith cometh by hearing.” Isn't that simple? I A it true? Some have said that “seeing is believing,” but a moment’s refle. tion will reveal that, like the phrase; “I’m from Missouri,” this - oinp is an expression of Unbelief. When we have seen thing Rev. S. F. Daly Seeking A Franklin, Va. Council Seat FRANKLIN, Va. - Rev. Sam uel F. Daly, former resident of Raleigh, N. C., but pastor of the First Baptist Church here for the past 14 years, announced recently for the City- Council. The election will be held on June 14, and he is be lieved to be the first member of his race to seek a seat on the Council. Rev. Daly, in announcing his REV. ■ J *ll r candidacy, said: “There are two or three things T would like Rev. Lorenzo Lynch To Be Installed At White Rock DURHAM -- Dr. Carlyle Marney, senior minister of Myers Park Baptist Church, Charlotte, will he the speaker for the Installation service for Rev. Lorenzo a. Lynch, pastor of White Rock Baptist Church, on Sunday, April 21, at 5 p. m. The public is cordially invited to attend. The formal installation service will climax activities which began on April 17, at 7;30 p. rri. with a lay s:er mon by Roy G. But when we hear (or read) a matter reported, we may either believe or doubt it. “Faith cometh by heart ing.” And likewise hearing comes through what has been said. We believe what we hear and we hear what has been said. The Christian’s faith, then, comes by hearing (God) and hearing by THE WORD of God. All true Christian faith is founded on the Word of God. Actually the word "hearing’*, in Rom. i0;17, has the idea of heeding -- paying attention, ea ger listening. This is why Gal. 3;5 speaks of “the hear ing of faith.’* Thus Eph. 1:13, referring to Christ, says: “IN WHOM YE ALSO TRUSTED, HAVING HEARD THE WORD OF TRUTH, THE GOSPEL OF YOUR SALVATION.” Similarly v < read in John 5;24 the words of the Lord Jesus: “HE THAT HEARETH MY WORD, AND BE LIE VETH ON HIM THAT SENT ME, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE, AND SHALL NOT COME INTO JUDGEMENT, BUT IS PASSED FROM DEATH UNTO LIFE.” to clarify at the beginning: "First, I am not running as a Negro candidate. While by the incidence of birth I happen to be a Negro, I think of my self as a citizen of Franklin, running to be elected by a cross section of Franklin, for all of Franklin, and, if elected, I will serve all the people of Frank lin. “Second, I am not a politi cian and do not aspire to be one. Though I have never run for public office before, I am no novice to government struc ture and operation. I have per suaded three men to run for city councils and managed one.” He also noted that the men of the City Council “have usually been good men, and have done a r easonably good job, but they are unrepresentative.” He stated that Franklin is divided into an East Side and a West Side and both sides are all right, but he said all Council men the city has had and those now in the race are from the West Side. This candidate doesn’t have the usual platform, stated the Rev. Mr. Daly, “but I am run ning on principles.” “I never agree to anything in private that I would not stand up to in public,” he said. “I would be open to all aides, individuals and facet s,” the minister concluded. Deacons. J. W. Goodloe, chairman of White Rock’s Trustee Board will deliver the lay sermon at the 11:00o’clock service on April 24. Following Dr. Marney’sad dress, and the formal installa tion service, a reception will be held at the church for the speaker and th Lynch family. The installation service, and the activities preceding it will be part of the 100th An niversary Celebration for White Rock Baptist Church, which was established in 1866, At? We should remember always that true peace comes first from within each one of us. Peace of mind, peace of heart, tranquilli y, and poise are pos sible to every person. We may be disturbed by con ditions in the world, In our bus iness, or in our homes but it is possible always to find serenity, comfort, and peace by turning to God. He is ever present, arid His peace is ours for the seeking and asking. If ever we feel separated from God, it is only because we have allowed disturbed and anxious thoughts to prevent us from making contact with Him. When we can relax completely in prayer, and feel our close ness to our Father, then we can have peace of mind and heart at all times and under all cir cumstances. Try each moring to delicate that day to God and to trust in His goodness. Trust Him to inspire right thoughts in you. Trust Him to speak through you. Trust Him to act through you. If you do this, you cannot help but proceed through every experience with perfect poise equanimity. With the ever-present help of God, you can have mastery over your thoughts and your feelings, and over every condition or situation that may confront you. Problems have away of dis appearing as we walk with God, for He is the perfect answer to every problem. God makes our path clear as we follow His light. The path of the Lord is straight and clearly marked with love and understanding. He blesses our hearts with happi ness. He blesses our lives with harmony. “But the path of the right eous is as the dawning light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” - Prov. 4-18.
