Tarhoro Rd., informed the editor of this column last Thursday night that she was not struck by her hus band, Wilbert Aaron Lassiter, Jr., of 1311 S. Person St., as •aas reported. She did admit, however, that he '-pulled on me" in the 200 block of E. Lenoir St., about 9:15 p. m. on Sunday of last week. This information was report ed in last week’s Crime Beat, taken from the official files of the Raleigh Police Department. We apologize to Mrs, Lassi ter for any undue embarrass ment caused her. * * * ATTACKED AT MAN'S HOUSE Miss Katherine Watkins, 28, of 710 S, Bloodworth St., told Officers C. R. Aycock and R. Clayborne, at 1:20 p. m. Fri day, she was assaulted by James Cleveland Bennefield, 40, of 720 S. Bloodworth St., at bis home. The complainant exhibited a one-half inch cut on the bottom lip and lacerations on the right side of her face. She told "the law" that she would come to headquarters and sign an assault and battery war rant against Bennefield. * * * DOESN’T KNOW WHO CUT HER Miss Euia Mae Sanders, 31, of 410 1/2 Dorothea (formerly Cannon St.) Drive, reported to Officers W. J. Fowler and C. R. Kirby at 12:33 a. m. Satur day, that "somebody cut me ■when I came out on the front porch. ’ The woman declared she didn’t knov who "sliced" her. She suffered a 2-inch long laceration on the left side of her face. * * * THREATENS BROTHER WITH SHOTGUN Rozell Byrd, Washington, D. C., formerly of this city, told Officers Otis L. Hinton and E. Curtis Winston at 12:31 a. m. Saturday, that his br ot he r, Preston Byrd, 33, of 206 Cooke (formerly N. Haywood) Street, threatened him with a shotgun. When officers went to Pres ton’s house, he pointed a load ed .12 gauge shotgun at them. He was finally arrested on a rap of assault with a deadly wea pon and lodged in Wake County MISS QUARLES VALEDIC TORIAN -- Miss Maureen Diane Quarles has been named vale dictorian of the graduating class of Matoaca High School, Ches terfield, Va. Daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Walker H. Quarles, Jr. of Virginia State College, where he is executive assistant to the president and secretary of the college, Maureen '. ill deliver the valedictory address at Ma toaca’s second commencement on June 10. During high school, she was a majorette with the marching band, and was active in science and math organiza tions. She made her debut at the AKA Cotillion in Raleigh, N. C., last November. Maureen has made definite plans to major in mathematics at college, but it yet undecided as to where she will matriculate. A&T FINALS SPEAKER—Dr. John A. Schnlttker, undersecre tary of agriculture, U. S. De partment of Agriculture, Wash ington, D. C., will deliver the main'address at the annual bac calaur pat e-commencement ex ercises for a&T College on Sunday, June 5. The program is scheduled for the Charles Moore Gymnasium, beginning at 11 a. m. Jail. The gain was confiscated. Rozell Byrd declared his bro ther "got mad because I tried to stop him from beating his wife.” * * * STABBED AT CLUB 54 Mrs. Annie Laura Everette, 28, of 1004 Manly St., inform ed officers at 3:20 a. m. Sat urday, she was cut at the Club 54, corner S. Bloodworth and E. Davie Sts. by some unknown person. The complainant, who bad been attacked with a sharp ob ject, suffered a stab wound on the left leg. * * * ‘GRAB’ TWO WOMEN FIGHTERS Mrs, Sarah Jane Davis, 33, of 907 Fayetteville St., and Mrs. Pauline Howard, 38, of 905 Fayetteville St., were ar rested at 8:55 a. m. Saturday and charged with engaging in an affray by fighting each oth er with their hands and fists. Motive for the fistcuffs could not be ascertained. Neither woman exhibited any bruises. The incident took place at 907 Fayetteville, * * * TRIES TO ENTER HOUSE Mrs. Adele Watkins, of 524 Branch St., reported to offic ers at 11:50 p. m. Saturday, she left home about 1 p. m. and returned sometime later to discovei someone had cut the screen and broke > a window in her den in an attempt to gain entry to the residence. The would-be break-in artist was unsuccessful, however. Damage to the screen and windown were set at S2O. * * * SAYS FEMALE TORE SHIRT Clarence Louis Davis, 36, of 2~ 1/2 Cuba St., informed Officers O. L. Hinton and E. C. Winston at 8:43 p. m. He signed a damage to pro perty warrant against the young woman and estimated damage to his shirt at $4.00. * * * CAR’S WINDSHIELD BROKEN Mrs. Mary Frances Jeffreys, of 813 S. West St,, told Of ficers J. H. Ross and D. C. Williams at 8:25 p. m. Monday, someone broke out the front windshield in her 1966 Chevro let with a rock. One youngster has been cit ed to Domestic Relations Court and another is being sought in this case. The incident occurred at the corner of S. West and Cannon Sts. Damage to the windshield was not given, but is believed to Ire over SIOO. * * * THIEF STEALS IRON Miss B. Lucille Griswold, 220 E. Cabarrus St., told two cops at 11:30 a. m. Monday, she left home about 3:29 p. m. Sunday and returned about 7 p. m. to find the window in the kitchen of her residence was raised. When she started to iron on Monday around 11 a. m., the complainant stated, the iron was missing from it’s usual place on the ironing board. The iron was valued at $6.95. POOL CLOSED CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Ordered by a federal court to Integrate its swimming pool, the Cam bridge Volunteer Fire depart ment decided that it would rath er close It. The closing came after Judge Edward S. Northrop in U. S. District Court in Bal timore ruled that the pool and arena, used for roller skating and meetings, are public ac commodations under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. MISS MCDONALD Senior At Hillside Gets Grant DURHAM - Willie Catherine McDonald, a senior at Durham’s Hillside High School, has been awarded a scholarship by the Durham chapter of the North Carolina Alumni Association. Chapter president Claude Harrison, who announced the a ward this week, said the full tuition and book supplement scholarship at North Carolina College will begin in Septem ber of ’966. Miss McDonald, the daughter of Madison McDonald and the late Mrs. Janie MeDonald of 1404 Halley Street, won the scholar ship on. the basis of her Scho lastic Aptitude Test score and letters of recommendation. At Hillside, she is a member of the Student Council, Spanish Club, Dramatics Club, and the Na tional Honor Society. Miller, Jr. Is New Bennett College Prexy NEW YORK, N. Y. —Theap pointment of Dr. Isaac H. Mil ler, Jr. as the new president of Bennett College, Greensboro, North Carolina, was announced last Friday by Dr. Frederick D. Patterson, chairman of the board of Bennett College. Dr. Miller, who will assume office on September 1, is an as sociate professor of biochemis try at Meherry Medical Col lege and a former professor of chemistry at the Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina. He is also a Council Member, Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, and has serv ed as a research scientist at the Institute. In announcing the selection of the new president, Dr. Pat terson declared: “We are con vinced that the appointment of this distinguished nuclear sci entist and experienced teacher ill enhance educational stand ar .is at Bennett College and con tribute to the further acquisi tion of a highly qualified facul ty . “For the first time in the college’s 93-year history,’’Dr. Patterson added, “Bennett fac ulty members worked closely with the institution’s governing board in establishing criteria for the selection of a new pres ident. Dr. Miller attended high school in Salisbury, N. C., re ceived a Bachelor of Science degree from Livingstone Col lege there, and a Ph. D. in biochemistry from the Univer sity of Wisconsin. During the past If years, he has conduct ed extensive research in the fields of enzyme and isotope methodology and gas and thin layer chromatography. He is the author of numerous scienti fic articles.
