>fKE CAROLINIAN RALEIGH, N. C., SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1966 8 St. Paul AME Church Holds Fourth Quarterly Conference By Mrs. Lillie M. Hodge The fourth quarterly confer ence of Saint Paul AM E Church for this conference year, was held Sunday, September 18. The conference opened with the Sun day School at 9:30, The Supt., Mr. Terry Hough was in charge and teachers were at their posts. The lesson was review ed by Mr. Bryant Bethea. The Sunday School was well-attend ed, and is doing great work as a responsibility to those who look to it for guidance in growth for Christian living. Promptly at 11 o'clock, the music was furnished by the chancel choir of the church, under the supervision of Mrs, G. M. Farmer, who was at the console. After the i egular order of service led b) the pastor, the Rev. B. S. Foust, he then presented Dr. C. C. Scott, the presiding elder of the Raleigh district. Dr. Scott is a man of great experience in the AMF church, and has historical weight as to the truth of things fundamental. He chose his text from the 21 chapter of first Kings, and the 6th verse: “1 will not give thee my vineyard. Sub will not foresake.’' Dr. Scott stressed the fact that you cannot buy love, nor TWO MINUTES^ w ssns»*i /W-t a Sfc WIHC-S ./ i VJ WHAT IS GRACE? And thus God Himself is supposed to have conceived the idea of sin as “a gracious means to a glori ous ena." and to have caused man to fall into sin so that He might finally save him from It. Why an almighty, all wise, ali-lcving God per mitted sin to enter the universe must, for the time being remain air impenitrable mystery to us, but one thing is cer tain: He is NOT the auth or of sin. and NEVER ac cepts the responsibility for it except that in grace and love He bore its penalty for man Gcd calls sinners "children Os DISOBEDIENCE” and “children of WRATH" Eph 2:3. 3*. explaining in clearest ]#n,£u&£: t- 'it. N C can you buy the salvation of Jesus Christ, because they are the precious gifts of Jesus and they are not for sale. He admonished his listeners to stand for that which Is right, but let it be within the heart. He said,“Your rights too are not for sale. This was a wonder ful message and was heard over the broadcasting station of WLLE. At the evening service, Dr. Scott chose his text from St. Luke the 9th chapter and 23 verse: “If any mar. will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’’ This was an inspiring message. Immediately alter this mes sage, the business session was held in the annex of the church. The classes, clubs, and auxi liaries made fine reports. We were honored with the presence Os Mrs. C. C. Scott, the wife of the presiding elder, who gave her co-operative aid to the mis sionaries of the church con cerning what would be expected of them during the conference, which will be held at St. Paul in November. Her message gave us nev, inspiration. It was the consensus of the conference that the pastor and finally be saved may at first sound like wonderful grace, but actually there is not one particle of grace in it. for it is based cn the theory that since God got us into sin it is only just that He save us from its penalty. But grace is God’s mercy and kindness to the UNDESERVING. In Eph 2, after calling sinners “children of disobedience" and there fore “children of wrath,” the Apostle Paul goes on to say, "BUT GOD. who is RICK IN MERCY, for His GREAT LOVE wherewith He loved us hath quickened us . . . raised us ap . . . and made us co sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus; that in the ages to come He mightt Show TH E EXCEEDING RICHES OF HIS GRACE IN K3S KINDNESS TOWARD US THROUGH CHRIST JE SUS" 226 Freshmen, New Students At Bennett GREENSBORO —Some 226 freshmen and new students at Bennett College heard the Rev. Peter Addo, director of religious acfivilies, speak on "The Pursuit of Excellence" at their first worship service on Sunday. "To attain excellence," he explained, "you must give all you have. You must not only seek the excellent mind, but you must also seek excellence in your religious attitude. The occasion drew a record crowd. Biship R. L. Jones, who presides over the area, del ivered the dedicatory sermon and also led the congregation in the Act of Dedication. The interest manifested by mem bers of both races again pro ved the value of the Church to a community. Rev. O. L. Hairston, Shi loh Baptist Church, delivered the opening prayer. The Collect for Dedication Day was read by Rev. W ilson O, Weldon, West Market Street Methodist Church. The first lesson was read by Rev. G. Melvin Pal mer, Peace United Church of Christ. Bishop Wyoming Wells, Wells Temple Church of God in Christ, in whose church the congregation has worshipped since May 1965, was program med to read the second les son, but was absent due to of ficial duties and the Rev. Paul Morgan, Lutheran Church, did the chores. The Rev. G. W, Lawrence, presiding elder,Greensboro District, AME Zion Church, de livered the second prayer. W. H. Hearten, chairman, Trustee Board, presented the building to Bishop Jones. Music was fur nished by the Cathederal and Chancel Choirs, under the di rection of Mrs. Wilhemenia Bi shop, wife of the pastor and Minister of Music. Members of St. John’s Lodge No. 12, Prince Hall Masons, did the honors of unveiling the cor nerstone, while Bishop Jones, assisted by Rev. S. A. Speight, performed the ritual of cor nerstone ceremony. Rev. Cecil Bishop, under who-' leadership the land was !: vught and the building was e rected, served as Master of Ceremonies. He described the occasion as one designed to exemplif;, the true meaning of Christian living, giving the sa crificing. He was mindful of the cooperation that was shown by not only the congregation, but the entire city. He told the audience that all Greesn boro should strive to make the building a citadel for Christ ians and a refuge for those who yearned for a better life. The building is located at the corner of E. Florida and Larkin Strrets. It was one of the five major churches dis placed by redevelopment and according to Rev. Bishop was the first to complete a relocation project. MEDITATION A SERMONETTE BY COLIN DOUGLAS “Put on therefore, as God’s elect, holy and beloved, a heart oi compassiort, kindness..fore bearing one another.”—Col. 3; 12, 13. And indisputable ingredient in the achievement of harmon ious human relations is kind ness. Just like salt in food, kindness is essential In bring ing out the best in human nature. Mere politeness and conven tional courtesy are not enough. In all our dealings with others, friend and stranger alike, the added something that makes us glow with happiness and good will is kindness. Whatever we say or do, when enhanced by kindness, is received in the right spirit b> others. It is true, we may be called upon at times to speak firmly to another person about some matter, to say something that may possible embarrass or hurt that person. But when we pray, “Let me be kind,’’ when we sus in all circumstances, then we should be able to handle such a situation in away that will mitigate the hurt or em barrassment. What we say is sometimes not so important as HOW we say it. We should remember always that the way to any worthwhile achievement is the way of con stant, loving attention gene rously given to others. The pathway to overcoming any dif ficulty is along the Divine path way of Infinite kindness and helpfulness. In all youi relations with ottier persons, the more you concentrate on brightening their moments in your company with your kind and thoughtful attitude the more you will be adding to your own happiness. “Thou wilt show rrm “ - of life; In thy r <*?■ lness of p.' > An investment in Your Future .JVVL It II l l li Ulle if PAINT . . .
