C„ SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29. 19W A D tav i * Aviv Theater At St Aug, The Thursday evening per formance of the Aviv Theater at the Emery Fine Arts Cent er provided a temporary diver sion from the routine of class attendance and study at St. Aug ustine’s College. To an audi ence member, knowledgeable in folk dance and song, the exe cutive was very disappointing. Even though this group travels under the name of an Israeli folk group, there was no evi dence of authenticity in either the Israeli dance or any other “folk” dance presented. Rather It seemed that the troupe mem bers created stylized dances, choreographed to music select ed for that purpose. The vocalist, despite her tone quality and voice control, was also a disappointment in her selection of material. It would have been much more effective to rely on the original language of the folk song than on English translations which are already readily available to us on pop ular local radio stations. If the purpose of this per formance was to entertain our school population then this group did little more than that. If the purpose was to introduce us to folk dance for education al purposes, then this represen tation was unauthentic and med iocre at best. Suggestion: There are stu dents representing internation al cultures within the academic community. Numerous groups gather for the purpose of sing ing and dancing. Would it not be oossible to organize. within our own school community, a group that could learn such dances and songs? Mrs,, Sophie T. Fnedlander, instructor in English at St. Augustine’s Col lege. SINGLED OUT? WAUKEGAN, 111.—FrankHa rris, 36, NAACP branch, pre sident, was arrested on charges of violating the city’s new pa rade ordinance requiring that marchers’ names be submitted to police three days before a demonstration. The ordinance was passed at the urging of Mayor Robert Sabonjlan follow ing outbreaks in the Negro com munity in August. Harris said he was singled out for arrest as he marched in the annual honecoming parade of Wauke gan Twp. High School. His arrest is expected to test the constitutionality of the ordin ance. —i mi | WIG GLAMOUR ! Kifte « mk Fas biio Shis »«!«**■ leoh Mere \ Beauflfa! BBt "T Than Ever JONLY.. ?
