Va. - The death of Dr. Robert P, Daniel fifth President of Virginia State College, on Jan. 5, removes the executive hand that shaped many forces of change at a school now in the throes of transition from a state school for Negroes into an institution whose in fluence is being felt interna tionally. His death removed an educa tor who maintained a rare ca pacity for compassion and friendship, who emphasized a personal leadership, a man who put. his heart and soul into the affairs of a college whose his tory was replete with uncertain ties. One can never forget Dr. Dan iel ’s zeal just three months ago as he led the college’s tradi tional football cheer during a homecoming ceremony before a packed Virginia Hall Auditor ium, one of his last appear ances before a student body. The demonstration was a test ament by a dying man of an unrelenting love for the col lege he led for 18 years. His 18 years as executive of the Petersburg based campus were difficult ones. It was during his administration that the onus ‘Negro Institution’ was lifted from Virginia State Col lege as the college widened its scope In the sciences and hu manities while continuing its heavy role in supplying a large East Coast region with public school teachers for the remain ing predominantly Negro schools following the 1954 Su preme Court Desegregation de cision Dr. Daniel was an unflinch ing realist. He knew, perhaps better than anyone else, what he regarded as the dual ob jectives of the college. “We have an obligation to raise the standards of a ma ligned class of people, long the object of educational depriva tion. W'e also have a commit ment to establish an influen tial undergraduate oriented multi-racial college drawing widely from its local area,’’ he said last spring. If critics occasionally re marked about a disproportion ate curricula centering in re medial education, Dr. Daniel offered no apology, “Virginia State College is prepared to telescope six years of instruc tion into the lour years of the program to make up for the de ficiencies of Negro primary and secondary school preparation.” The Daniel Adrninistration had also been deprecated as one of ‘Paternalism.’ But this cha racterization offers additional Around Method * BY MISS RENA HOLLOWAY MFTHOD-Oak City Baptist Church Sunday School was held at 9:45 a.m. The Sunday School lesson for discussion was “Why Jesus Came” taken from John 1:1-42 verse. She says that the brother, Otis Bryant, 49, cut her on her left pelvis. The report also showed that the two had teen drinking. She said she would sign a warrant for assault with a deadly wea pon. evidence of his realism. “It is the policy of this college to avoid thd impersonality afflict ing many colleges today, where administration and faculty ex press little personal concern for students and students e merge less prepared than they should be. In our situation, this must be specifically avoid ed.” Dr. Daniel envisioned very early, the advent of profession al opportunities for Negro col lege graduates. He knew cur ricular changes would have to be shaped to embrace new chal lenges. He guided Instructional ed pansion into areas of prospec tive* employment previously de nied Negroes In the fields of business, incorperattng mana gement training and encourag ing the development of courses satisfying the requirements for a proliferation of technical op portunities.
