He Introduced the Director of the Good Neighbor Counsel, Mr. Boyce C. Medlln. Mr. Medlln Is assisted by Rev. J. Richard Woodard, Associate Director. • They both made it clear that a strenuous effort is being made by the Counsel to formulate a twelve month program which will be designed to expand em ployment and training op portunities for non whites. This he said “included upgrading and promotions of persons as well as Job entry, clerical as well as skilled and non skilled Jobs Mr. Medlln pointed out seven steps in which they are im plementing to eliminate dis crimination due to race, creed or national origin. Three cheers for the Good Neighbor Counsel for the state of North Carolina. May we hope and trust that our local Good Neigh bor Counsel will wake up and do as well. Mr. W. C. Patton was intro duced asQhe National Director for NAACP Voter Registration. Mr. Patton raised three im portant questions, “Who will be your next president? Who will be your next Governor? Who will be your next local county officers? The office he said for president is very important to every American citizen. A President who is outspoken on Civil Rights, can give the strongest leadership to the struggle to rid the na tion of racial discrimination. Beware of those leaders whn«o reservations are based on hu man or states rights. As yot become 21 go to your voting precinct, register and then vote. Watch all news media for the exact date and time for registration, and voting. Your vote will help decide who will be your local officer as well as the president of the United States. Please get your mind centered on registering and vot ing. PERSONALS AND CONDO LENCES Last week this column car ried the sad news of the Rev. David Verene, who at that time was very sick and in the Maria Parham Hospital. He has now passed to the Great Bevond. where none has ever waked to weep. David was a local minis ter of the AME Zion Church. meniDer of the Cooke’s chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and was confined to the Raleigh District Con ference. To mourn his loss a wife, Mrs. Della Verene, four sons and two daughters. His funeral took place Tues day at 3:30 p.m. at the Cooks Chapel Methodist Church on the Raleigh Rd. Rev. L. B. Rus sell officiated, assisted by Sister Mary Ward and Sister Jessie B. Stokes. Bobby Williams, son of Mrs. Blanche Williams of Bear Creek has been promoted to Sergeant according to an announcement from the seventh Base com mand of Fort Bragg. Williams is presently a postal supervi sor at Fort Bragg. After grad uation from basic training, he was assigned to the seventh base Post Office at Fort Bragg for on the Job training In postal op erations. Sgt. Williams will be leaving for Germany on March 2. Williams graduated from J, S, Waters High School in Goldston in 1965, He was a member of the 1964-65 basket ball team. Prior to entering service, he was an assembler for Saco-Lowell in Sanford. Frank linton FRANKLINTON - The Frank linton Branch of the National Association of College Women met at the Warrenton Baptist Church, Warrenton, Sunday, February 4 at 3 p.m. The Rev. J. P. Mangum, the guest, speaker addressed the group on “Brotherhood.” The meet ing was well attended. The Snap dragon Garden Club met Wednesday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Willie Morgan in Youngsville. The a genda consisted of makingplans to begin work on the scrapbook and yearbook. The president, Mrs F. B. Holt gave an in formative discussion on “The Care of Roses.” The hostess served a delicious repast of chicken salad, sliced tomatoes, club crackers, pickles, fruited punch, fruit cake trimmed with whipped cream and cherries. Each member thanked the hostess for a wonderful after noon. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 8, at 4 p.m. at the United Church of Christ with the Rev. J. P. Mangum officiating for Mr. Joshua Wilson Kearney, Sr., son o' the late Joshua and Cynthia Kearney was born July 10, 1884 in Franklin County. He departed this life February 4, 1968, at 3:20 a.m. so quickly the joy of life well lived had faded into a loving memory. He joined the Christian Church, which is nowthe United Church of Christ, at an early age and lived a consistent Christian life. He was active in the Sunday School and all departments of the church. He was ever ready to do whatever he could for the church, being the oldest deacon, he loved his church and was so interested in its ongoing, he never missed any service at the church. He •was a good neighbor and al ways had a good word for every one. He was cheerful, kind, and considerate, in fact as the Poet, said, “He lived in the house by the side of the road and was a friend to man.” He was a kind, loving father and provided well for his family. He married the late Stella Pender, to this union ten chil dren were born, eight of whom survive. Five daughters, Estelle Bailey, Durham; Beu lah K, Williams, Durham; Mary F. Robinson, Wyandaunc'n, Long Island, N. Y., Katie K. Rod well, Newark, N. J.; Cynthia K. Flood, Buffalo, N. Y„ Three sons, Beaddie, of the home, Presley, New York City and Joshua of Columbus, Ohio. AROUND JOHNSTON COUNTY DOING TOUR IN KOREA Mr. Mack C, McDonald is now serving with the Quarter Mas ters’ Corp and is stationed in Korea. He will remain there 13 months. He received his basic train ing at Ft. Bragg and then went to Ft. Lee, Va., where he re ceived additional education. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Kent, 901 N. Ave nue, and a 1965 graduate of Johnston Central. He was a member of the basketball team. An injury curtailed his basket ball career. PERSONALS Mrs. Joan Foster and Mrs. Stancil Judkins visited Mrs. Hettie Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Bell vi sited Mr. and Mrs. Dorse El liott. BURIED LAST WEEK Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Lassiter were held from Piney Grove Baptist Church Thursday, with Rev. J. S. Avery in charge. Burial was in the Church cemetery. She joined Piney Grove Church at an early age and remained until her death. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Elijah Archibald and was born in Johnston County. She had lived here all her life. She married Mr. Allen Lassiter and to this union, 8 children w-ere born, seven of and four great-grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters and a host of relatives and friends. Students who were Inducted were Frank Crawford, Jr., Rosa Davis, Gloria Hood, William Kirby, Maxine Richardson, Jen nifer Smith, Theresa Whitley, and Rosa Williamson. William H. Clayton, assistant agricultural Extension agent of Johnston County, was speaker. He stressed the importance of self reliance. “Be Yourself and strive to do your best, so that you can measure up in challenging society,’ ’Mr. Clay ton said. “There was a time when we as a race had the ex cuse that we weren’t hired be cause of the color of our skin. This is no longer so. If one meets the required standards for a job, he can most likely get it.” Mr. Clayton included in his speech the imp>d.ane? of neai pess and cleanliness in society.
