M. CAM, 828-7513 or TE 2-8558 IMMEDIATE DELIVERY SERVICE YOU ARE THE DETECTIVE You are talking with Rob Harkness, manager of the super market, who has reported the robbery of more than $7,000 of the grocery’s receipts. “He was a big, tall fellow . . . looked like he weighed well over 200 pounds. I couldn’t see much of his face ... he had a broadbrimmed black felt hat pulled way down over Ins eyes, and he was wearing a dark brown topcoat, buttoned right up to the neck, with the collar up and covering the lower part of his face. He was also wearing crepe-soled sport shoes, and I guess that’s why I didn’t hear him come into the otlice behind me.’ “Just how did it happen?’ you ask Harkness. “Well, I was sitting here at my desk in the office totaling up the receipts when suddenly I heard this voice behind me tell me to put my hands up. 1 glanced back and saw him standing there just inside the door with a gun in his hand. I got my hands up fast, then lie told me to get up from the desk and move over against the wal' Then, calm as you please, he lit a cigarette, placed his gun down carefully on the desk, and proceeded to scoop all the bundled-up currency on the desk Into a black attache case he was carrying. Then he ordered me back to the chair, stuffed a big handkerchief into my mouth, waved a hand at me in a mocking sort of goodbye gesture, and slipped out the door. It took me at. l-.-ast ten minutes or so to work myself loose from the rope -- then I phoned you.” “Is there anything else at all you can tell me about this robber that might help us to identify him?” you ask. “Well, he had sort of an air of culture or refinement about him, spoke in almost a pleasant manner and in a very nice sounding voice. He was well dressed, too .. . clean, white shirt, blue paisley tie . . and, oil yes, this might help you, too -- he was wearing a tie-clip with the initial ‘F’ on it.” You gaze reflectively about the little o'tfice for a minute or so, then ask, “Are you insured against this loss?” “Oh sure , , the boss won’t really be losing anything at all.” “On the contrary,” you then say, “I think your boss WILL be losing something -- one store manager! I suspect this rob bery was framed by you”’ What has led you to this conclusion? * * * SOLUTION Bob Harkness told you originally that the robber was weal - ing a topcoat buttoned up to his neck, with its collar tin and cov eting the lower part ol his face. Then later, obviously due to his over-eagerness to divert any suspicion from himself, he described the robber’s white s-tiirt, tie, and the initial on his tie-clip. He surely could not have seen these items underneath the buttoned-up topcoat. BURL ALLEN’S {I MKTON6UE Many individuals ar o very UNSUCCESSFUL vale ntinos.
