D. CAN'T THINK! HOUSTON, Texas - I am beginning a new federal posi tion and must speak before small groups of 15 to 30 peo ple. My problem can be summed up in a few words, “I am rattled on my feet.*’ What would you suggest? V. I. P. ANSWER: It seems that you can’t think, because the com plexity of the proposition rat tles you. Maybe you can't tell the difference between the essentials and small details. Here is what I recommend: Develop the technique of seeing your objective (pur pose) and outline the steps by which you will read) your speech goal. This is bast achieved by developing a good habit of outlining your speech first before trying to deliver it. Get a public speaking book and study the topic of “making an outline." The habit of making an out - line will keep you from los ing your way In a fog. This will enable you to know what you want to say and bow you »re going to arrive at your conclusion. “Thinking on your feet” is Just as easy as ©on versing over a hamburger.
