Johnnie Milton Holmes, Sr, died January 4 to a Golds- REV. JOHNNIE HOLMES, SR. boro hospital. Funeral services were conducted from the First Baptist Church last Wednesday, January S at 2 p.m, with the Rev. J. L. White, officiating. Rev. Holmes was educated at Shaw University, Raleigh and Livingstone College, Salisbury. He was principal of several schools in Sampson County. He was a member of the Masonic Order and served as an officer for a period of time. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Julia Mae Holmes of the home; one son, Dr. Johnnie Milton Holmes of Washington, D. Dr, Joseph Jones, Jr., aca demic dean and professor of biology at Saint Augustine's College, has announced that the annual Summer Institute in Nu clear Science for High School DR. JOSEPH JONES, JR. Teachers of Science will begin on the campus June 9, and will end July 18. The program is jointly supported by the Na tional Science Foundation and the United States Atomic En ergy Commission. The National Science Founda tion provides a basic stipend of $74 per week for Institute par ticipants. Dependency allow ances up to a maximum of four dependents. In addition, each participant will receive a round trip travel allowance up to eight cents per mile for a maximum travel allowance up to $l2O. No charge are made for tuition and fees. To be eligible to participate in this Summer Institute, the prospect should: a. be a high school teacher of natural science in grades 7-12; b. have had at least one year of col lege level training in biology, chemistry, physics and mathe matics; c. have had at least three years of high school teaching experience; d. be re commended by his principal or immediate supervisor; e. show evidence of being able to bene fit by attending the Institute. The program of the Institute is designed to provide high school teachers of science, who have not had training in nuclear science, with a knowledge of some of the fundamental con cepts in radiology, radio chemistry and radiobiology, including training in the use and handling of radioisotopes and radiation detection instru ments.
