FROM RALEIGH’S OFFICIAL POLICE FILES THE CRIME BEAT (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) TRIES TO TRICK WOMAN Mrs Esther B. Golden of the Raleigh Loan Office, 223 S. Wil mington Street, told Officer G. W. Black at 6:01 p. m. last Monday, that a colored male came into the store that day about 5;30 p.m. and purchased assorted merchandise, then gave a credit card in the name of K. W. Lee, When Mrs. Gol den asked for some identifica tion, the subject said he had left Ids driver’s license in his car. Mrs. Golden asked him to go and get it while she check ed to see if the card was val id. The subject then removed himself from the store and did not return, she declared. She further stated that the man ap peared to be about 28, fiveieet, eleven inches tall and weigh ed about 185 pounds. He was of medium complexion and wore white trousers. * * * "SWIPES” WALLET, caught Robert G. Freddy, white res ident of 122 Edgewood Drive, Louisburg, reported to Officers j. R. Tate and W. R. Vaughn at 4:54 p.m. last Monday, that lie lost his wallet at the Sir Waite: Hotel’s Coffee Shop two days earlier, but left word at Lie hotel that a $25 reward was being offered for the return of his billfold. Arrested later and charged with fradulent use of a credit card was Edward Evans, 10, 1326 Pender Street. Damage to his vehicle was set at SBS. * * * NAB MEAT-STEALERS James R. McCauley, an em ployee of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., 2201 S. Wilmington St„ told Officers W. F. Booth and H. W. Hagwcod at 6:28 a.m. Tuesday, that two colored males, C. D. Upchurch, 46, 813 Bunche Drive, and J. O. Jones, 37, 1309 Holman St., were discovered with sixteen packages of meat, valued at $3 5, in their lunch boxes as they were leaving work. The two men were apprehended out side of a building, used as the meat warehouse Both were charged with larceny. * * * WOMAN CLAIMS ASSAULT Miss Julia Ann Stallings, 18, 204 1/2 Pugh Street, reported to Officer P. E. Braswell at 9;08 p.m. Wednesday, that her step-father, James Winston, 36, same address, was “beatingon my mother.” She said that while t rying to help her mother, Wins ton “turned on me” and cut her her on the index finger of the left hand. She declared Winston also hit her on the head. She told the cop that she would sign an assault warrant against Winston later. T. V. SET "LIFTED” Mrs. Rometa Watkins, 553 F. Martin Street, informed Of ficer Norman Artis at 1:40p.m. Wednesday, that she left home for work about 7:50 a.m. that day, and when she returned at 1:20, she discovered the glass had been broken out of the kit chen door and the door had been unlocked and opened Stolen was her nineteen-inch Motoroiatel evlsion set, valued at $175. A glass vase, used for flowers, was taken to the City-County Identification Bureau for fin gerprint checks. * * * PRINCIPAL’S WINDOW BROK EN Herbert Elliott Brown, prin cipal of the John W. Ligon Sen ior School, told Officer W. B. Harrington at 9;04 p.m, Fri day, that he parked his green 1964 Ford station wagon on Up church Street, near the school, about 7 p.m., and when he re turned to it, he found his wind shield smashed and a rock on top of the car. Brown told the officer that he had a good idea of who the suspect is. Damage was placed at SBO. * * * STEALS AT PENNY'S Officer J. W. Wright report ed at 8:30 p.m Thursday, that Miss Laverne Raiford, Route 3, Box 284, Smithfield, "picked up ten items from the jewelry counter, valued at $1 a piece. These items were put in sub ject’s pocket of her outer coat. He said the duo was attired in dark blue sweaters and blue jeans. * ** * "SLICED” IN CAFE Alton Jackson Peele, 34, 411 W. First Street, Erwin, a white man, told Officer D. Brinson at 10;54 p.m, Friday, that he was cut while seated in the Bus Station gan Street. He said he had an argument with 23-year-old Robert Haywood, Jr., 186 Hill side Avenue, Newark, N. J„ who was charged with assault with a deadly weapon (a knife), after Peele received an approx imate ten-inch cut on the back of the neck and the right side of his head. Haywood received a one-inch cut on the wrist in the melee, also. Thirty-seven stitches were required to close Mr. Peele’s wounds, * * * "FINGERS” BOYFRIEND Miss Bernice Greene, 42, 719 Manly Street, reported to Officer r\ W. Miller at 11:51 a m. Sunday, that she and her boyfriend, Wilson Lanier, 43, same address were parked in front of their house and were arguing.
