Besides unscreened grates and fireplaces, the principal cause of fires in the home at this season is improperly plac ed and lighted Christmas trees, Robert M. Oswald, national di rector of Red Cross Safety Programs, said today. Christmas trees can be a hazard in several ways, he de clared, adding that the dangers can be overcome by taking these simple and sensible per cautlons: First, select a fresh tree, one that will be resistant 'o fire. Second, when installing it, place it in water and well away from walls. Renew the water as it evaporates, until the tree is taken down and discarded. Third, modernize your de corations Use electric light fixtures that carry the approval label of the Underwriters La boratories. "It may seem in credible, but some families still use candles. Electric bulbs are plentiful, safe and inexpen sive," Mr. Oswald said. "Be sure that all light fixtures are in good repair, not frayed or damaged," he added. 1 ‘Disconnect Christmas lights before retiring or leav ing the house, and use non-in flammable tree trimmings as far as possible. These percau tions will help assure a safe Christmas." 5
