Jjftk f f *§R*AN *i»U SOCIRTY 17/ CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 60635 / GOD’S ETERNAL PURPOSE Have you ever considered carefully the opening words ol the Bible? “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Why doesn't it simply say that God created the uni verse? Why the leaven and the earth? As we go on reading we find the answer to this question, foi the Bible clearly teaches that God has a two-fold purpose; one having to do with the earth and the other with heaven. The former is the subject of pro phecy, while the latter is the subject of the “'mystery ’, or secret, revealed to and throng- St Paul. (See Acts 3;21; and cf. Rom. 16r25). The former concerns Israel and the na tions; the latter “'the Body of Christ,” the Church of the heavenly calling. Some people are surprise to learn that there is not one promise in the whole Old Testa ment about going to heaven. There the whole outlook is earthly, with Messiah reigning as King (Jer, 23'5, et al). When our Lord appeared in the flesh the angels cried; “Peace on earth” (Luke 2:14). He Himself said that "the meek” should “inherit the earth” (Matt. He taught His disciples to pray; “Thy will be done inearth as it is in heaven ' (Matt. 6:10). Indeed, be fore God believers are already given a position “in heavenly places” and are "blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3; 2:4-7), The prophecies regarding the kingdom, however, will still be fulfilled and Christ will reign on earth and bring the promised "times of refreshing.’ Thank God, this world will not for ever be a place of war and blood shed, sickness and death, misery and woe. Indeed, at that time, heaven and earti will be Opened to each other, and thus will be fill filled God’s two fold purpose: "That in the dis pe ns at ion of the fulness of times He might gather together in one. all things In Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on eaeth; even in Him” (Eph. 1:10). UNCF also help to create a reservior to supply this coun try’s need for more and more college trained people in the years ahead.’’ In addition to supporting UNCF, Woolworth awards col lege scholarship annually through the National Merit Scholarship program. REV. S. P. COOKE ford. Rev. S. P. Cooke of Kit trell, is the Evangelist. The Gospel Choi us of I-Long Bap tist Church and other singers will be present. The public is sincerely invited to, “Seek ye tie I.ord while He is near, call ye upon Him while He Is near.” MEDITATION A SERMONETTE BY COLIN DOUGLAS “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty.” Prov. 16:32. You may admire the self controlled person who is always poised and not given to quick anger or resentment when something of a disturbing na ture occurs. You may even say to yourself, with perhaps a trace of envy: “If only I could be self-controlled and not lose my temper, how much different life would be!” You may think that you have no power over yourself or over the way in which your react to conditions and situations in your life, but the truth is you DO have this power, God has en dowed you with the qualities of mind and heart whereby you can develop the self-control and poise you admire so much in others. There is an old saying; “When you pray, move your feet.” This means of course that we must not regard prayer as a pas sive waiting process--but that prayer must always be accom panied by action on our part. When you embark on any self improving project it is impor tant that you spend time In pray er and let the love, peace, and harmony of God fill your mind. Such prayer will encourage and strengthen you, and action will follow the prayer. God will al ways co-operate with us, but we must always co-operate with God and make full use of the blessed equipment, physical and mental, with which He endowed us and which He expects us to use. As we open our minds and hearts to the love and widom of God, our minds and bodies become relaxed with faith In His never-failing presence, and there is no room within us for impatience or doubt. We know He is in charge, and everything will work for our good. “Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and He will sustain thee.” -- Psalms 53:22.
