"Anything under ,50u call
would be rather disappointing''
said George Clements, new
head football coach of Shaw U
niversity, who has as his lot
the duty of bringing the foot
ball Bears from the brink of dis
aster to the realm oi respect
ability.
The coach, however, refuses
to set a table on the length
of time it will take to accom
plish this. Instead he says “the
anatomy of a team sport is a
precarious thing and a time
table is hard to develop. A
team may jell in a couple of
games.”
The lot, nevertheless, has
befallen him and the en
thusiastic ex-quarter coach has
sprinkled his supporting cast
with a battle scored veteran
and two relatively young
coaches.
Jesse Clement an ex-team
mate of his at St. Augustine’s
in the early 1950’s brings 17
years of experience with him
and a reputation for being a
shrewd coordinate of defense.
Enoch Dukes, another ex-Fal
coln, is also noted for his de
fensive ability and Bell,
a former Bear, who was an
All-State tackle at Wilmington
Wllllston High School.
Although the Bears are re
turning 36 lettermen including
12 starters, they are coming off
of their second consecutive los
ing season. This poses one of
the biggest problems confront
ing the coaching staff - the de
velopment of a winning attitude.
Shaw lost four of Its six loss
es by lopsided margins last
year.
That presents a second major
problem the development of in
terior linemen, "Linemen are
hard to come by” said Coach
Clements. "Mention football
at Shaw and 800 backs will
jump out of the wall and only
one lineman." The records
show that Shaw, last year, did

QUANTICO, Va.-With their
biggest game of the year less
than two weeks away, A&T’s
young football team will get
down to the serious business of
eliminating mistakes.
"We saw a lot of mistakes

coach Murray Neely. "This is
what we are going to work on,
things like blocking for the

Greensboro’s Dudley High Fops
Ligon’s Little Blues 26 To 14
The football season hit the
nation with a bang, but for the
Llgon High Little Blues, it was
a disappointing bang as they
fell to a powerful Greensboro
Dudley team 26-14, in the sea
son opener last Friday.
Fall tag behind 13-Oat the half,
Coach Frank Roberts' charges
hit the comeback trail in the
tmrd quarter 1 and erupted for
14 points behind the quarter
backing of Joe King, to take the
lead.
Charlie Muldrow got the
Blues In the scoring column
with a 70 yard scamper on a
King handoff before many fans
has resumed their seats after
receiving the second half kick
off.
The dazzling run rejuvenated
the Llgon team and it put the
brokes on Dudley's next attack.
King, then, went to work on the
Panthers defense sending Mul
drow skirting the ends and
throwing short flair passes to
George Foxwell before finally
hitting Foxwell for the score
from 35 yards out.
Albert Banks kicked both ex
tra points to give the Little
Blues a short lived lead, 14-
13.
Dudley, however, with its
stillar guard game bounced back
to regain the lead at the close
of the third period, 19-14. With
a running game reminiscent
of the Old Green Bay Packer,
Dudley plowed through the Blues
line, staying on the ground, as
it marched 70 yards to pay
dirt with Billy Surgeon blasting
the last 12.
With time running out in the
last quarter Llgon took to the
air but Its attempt was futile
as Dudley’s Mark Woods pluck
ed his second erratic aleral
from the air and headed for pay
dirt, Tills time It was a Ron
Burrell toss.
Earlier, Woods snagged a
King pass to set up the Panth
er’s second touchdown In the
first quarter. Jacob Parnell
carried it over from five yards
out three plays later.
The Panther’s ftrst score
came with only three minutes
left in the first period when
quarterback Lewis McCoy hit

ter." It’s not that we don’t have
any linemen; it’s that we don’t
have any depth. If you have any
injuries there, we’re in trou

Junior center Joseph John
son (6-0, 240) mans the of
fensive line and is flanked by a
pair of 6-2, 240 guards Stanley
Price and Bobby Davis and
tackles Leon Glliis (6-4, 285)
and Gus Lovett, (6-3, 240),
Lovett will captain the team
while Glliis is also slated for
defensive duties.
Offensively, Clements says
"We’ll do what the defense
dictates,” but with a host of
fleetfooled receivers, It is ex
pected he’ll lean toward the
passing game. With receiver
like Frank Hunter, a 9.4 dash
man, Charles Smith, 9.5, Henry
Roundtree, 9.6, Allen Hepburn,
9.8, and Thomas Gaskin, 10, It
becomes natural for the ball
to fly through the air. Hep
burn Is the only senior and
is being watched closely by the
Dallas Cowboys.
Veterans signal caller Leroy
Jones Is currently the leading
quarterback but is being push
ed by Virginia Union transfer
Lionel Coleman who has been
described as "real quick with a
good football mind and a good
field general. Freshman Law
rence Boulid also remains in the
picture. He is "a tremendous
passer and has a very, very
quick rele a s e, but he often
throws too quick and too long."
The Bears ground attack one
of the brighter spots will
again feature the 1-2 punch of
Roderick Wynecoff, a 5-9, 218
pound senior and junior Wil
liam Hackett (6-0, 240) along
with sophomore slotback
Brooker Vann (6-1, 183).
Wynecoff has led the team in
rushing the past two seasons
gaining over 800 yards last
year. His biggest day was 199
yards in a losing cause to Vir
A&T’s forward wall, led by
senior tackle Lester Moore
and sophomores William Wide
man, Ben Tatum and William
Hunter, kept a lot of pressure
on Quantico’s runners and quar
terbacks.
Ttits group was greatly as
sisted by linebackers Ben
Blacknall, Dempsey Bryant and
Ralph Coleman.
A&T’s big problem on offense
appeared to be a lack oftiming,
not serious at this state since
the Aggie backs had only four
days of practice.
The Quarterbacking chores
were shared by senior Jerome
Turner and junior Charles Mid
dleton, both classy runners, as
well as passers. Turner scor
ed twice on runs and Middleton
Surgeon with a screen pass
and the chucky fullback cover
ed the remaining 35 yards un
touched.
Although the Little Blues last,
there was still some glory ob
tained. Muldrow and Foxwell
are among the leaders in scor
ing and Joe King threw the only
