Mrs. Patten Writes From Ahmed BY MRS. BERNETTA H. PULLEN Relieve it or not, I'm still promenading from one Institu tion to another. Some valuable material was given to me, pub lished by Le Bureau Unlver sitalre De Statistique et De Documentation Scolaires et Professionnelles, and “L' Or ganization De L' Enselgnment En France,” published by In st it ■r e Pedogogique National (1070) How ever, dissatisfied, I have enrolled in Alliance Francais and was granted permission to observe classes from the first degree to the 4th degree in cluding a course in Conversa tion, audio-visual and labora tory work. It was here that president of the board of Ex amine.-, M. Lebeque advised me to travel" throughout the provinces of France. Having discussed my aims with Parisians and Africans, I met, it encouraged me more to do research in how foreign language is taught to our young er children. Since my NYU days, I’ve been tremendously interested In the Fies program (Foreign Language in the Elementary School). It Is my philosophy that since communication is the key to a door, foreign language should be studied and studied early. Here we have flexibili ty of the tongue, more interest anxiety and mimicry. Today, our children are travelling at all ages. More and more of our students are travelling abroad during the summer. Here, I’ve met and observed many college and high school students with prob lems. Last spring, my 8 and 10 year old children joined a group that flew to New York for a day to visit ..Bronx Zoo, Radio City and the UN. After their return and on our way home, I was told by one that they enjoyed the trip and had decided on plane to fly to Cape Kennedy this spring. The first thing that entered my mind was, who knows where these little minds may lead them next 0 Will they be able to com municate or will they have dlf- | ficulty as I’m having 0 I feel that we, as foreign language teachers, have a great responsibility ahead of us, with foreigners moving in with us daily. Let us do as I was once told “Get on the Ball I ', and learn methods and techni ques to prepare our children for tomorrow. I, too, once said I would | never get to Paris to see and know more about in reality prizes for consumers,” ac cording toO. D. My time is swiftly passing away here with still more to do before it terminates. My weekends will be spent in the French provinces with the Parisiens,’ then to Switzerland, Madrid and London. Then on my way home to do a better job this school year with that which I’ve gained abroad. Now that I’ve returned and resumed my classroom studies, my students constantly ask me to tell them my experiences in France. It was quite en joyable even to me, While thumbing through the pages of a book, entitled “Travel In France” it was the same feel ing exDlaining the places, monuments, etc. as I had when I actually touched the Eiffel Tower, Arede Triompbe and pulled leaves from the trees in Jardin du Luxemburg. The next part of the lesson was to show them slides that I had taken while there. One will never know who was more thrilled during that class peri od. I feel already that I have given them something that means a great deal to both of us. The first 25 prize-winning consumers will automatically win prizes for the retailers whose name appears on the en try blank. Grand prize for retailers is an all-expense paid trip for two to the Super Bowl plus SSOO. There are four first prizes of SIOO and 20 sec ond prizes of SSO for retailers. In addition to a wide variety of displays and posters, the sweepstakes is advertised in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED maga zine. * * * A new law increases monthh payments 8 to 12 percent (re troactive to July 1) for most vets with service-connected disabilities.
