Sickle cell anemia, until re
cently unknown to most Ameri
cans, is not a new problem.
It has assumed greater prom
inence in recent years, how
ever, along with the Increase
in self awareness among the
Black population. It is estimated
that 1 out of 10 Blacks are car
riers of the disease and roughly
i out of 400 have the disease.
The condition is chronic and dis
abling, and no cure has beer
developed.
