United Church Os Christ Body Calls Upon FCC Jo Adopt 3-Point Program WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Of fice of Communication of the two- million member United Church of Christ has called u pon the Federal Communica tions Commission adopt a three - point program to strengthen and stringently en force the “Fairness Doctrine" in order to protect the public from “the voraciousness’’ of broadcasters and to assure mi norities of the right to be heard on television and radio. Calling “the tyranny of the corporate conglomerate as dan gerous as the tyranny of govern ment,” the church agency claimed that the Fairness Doc trine is essential to pre\.■ freedom of speech on the air 'from being abridged by broad casters. “The precious liberty assured by the First Amendment to all broadcast licensees to attack whomever they choose must foe balanced by an equally preci ous privilege of those who are attacked to respond,” the Church body, a leading expo nent of the rights of the pub lic in broadcasting, told the Commission, The Office of Communication ■also sharply attacked the FCC’s Administration of the Fairness doctrine, claiming that broad casters in every part of the country “have violated the pro visions of the Fairness Doc trine with impunity from Com mission discipline. ’ The church comments were filed in response to an FCC no tice that it is examining the efficiency of the Fairness Doc trine. The doctrine, enuneiat ed by the Commission in 19- 49 , requires stations to broad cast information and opinion about controversial issues and so provide balanced coverage of mo mms% vrm m smie /?\ sr eenNittu* s. jtam puss. * j j IMEAN *I»U SOCItTY CMECAGO, ItMNOtS *0635 f £ V^V "A NEW YEAR WISH” Grace he to you and peace Though days be dark about us. Many stations refuse to discuss such issues because of the need to air sides, sometimes avoid ing a positive position which they favor because of the ne cessity to offer a rebuttal. If this clarification is not made, the church comments assert, there is dangei that “the sub stitution of biandness for fair ness" will continue. Make it easier for the public to file Fairness Doctrine com World Fellowship Group Meets In Session At YW’ The World Fellowship Group of the East Raleigh branch of the YWCA held its annual Christmas party Tuesday night, December 21, at the YWCA, 554 Fast Hargett St. Mrs. Mary G. After the devotion, the mem bers and guests played games and were served delicious good ies of all kinds. The tables were dec rated with point ettas and candles. The Christmas ti ee had lots of presents under it, which were exchanged, after we had finished eating. The Christmas spirit was in the air plaints bv providing simple forms to fill out, by giving members of the public access to program records of stations and by providing preliminary relief in cases where time is a major factor in the contro versy. Extend the doctrine so it co vers so - called “ballot questions,” and -provide that where one side of a political issue is discussed in paid spot announcements, free spots in opposition lie provided for ba lance. The church agency also argues that a station’s accep tance of spots on a ballot ques tion is a recognition that con troversy exists and that the station thereby is obligated to devote program time to dis cussion of the issue. and we closed by singing Christ mas Carols. An enjoyable time was had by all. Members and guests, who at tended the party were: Mr. and Mrs. James O. Wright, Miss Mary L. Wright, Miss Delle L. Wright, Miss June D. Meditation A SERMONETTE BY COLIN DOUGLAS “Stir up the gift of God.*’ Timothy 1:6. It is possible at any time in vein life, if you will “accept the challenge,” to make a new beginning -- to start a new life. You have not lived too many yeai;s to have this fresh, new life. You have not made too many mistakes to have a new life. You are not outwardly bound by too many responsibi lities or handicaps to have a new life. But, you MUST ac cept the challenge! You MUST take a stand in your own mind for that new life' The moment you accept the challenge, you will feel new vigor, new Inspiration, and you will gain a new perspective. As you know, the gifts of God are never depleted; they are al ways with us, at every age, at every point in life -- great, boundless, unlimited, and ac cessible. You can stir up these gifts of God within and about you at any time you want to, and begin your new life. You have energy you have not yet begun to tap. You have mental capacities you have not begun to exercise. You have gifts of understanding you have not explored. Stir up the gifts of God within you and begin right now, at this moment, to live deeply and fully! Meet the challenge! Make this moment a new beginning! Go deep within yourself in prayer. Rest in His arms, and the feel ing of perfect relaxation that comes with prayer and “con versation” with God will forti fy you with whatever you need to meet today's problems. Re member always -- you are not what you were yesterday. Y'ou are what you are TODAY. Yes terday’s experiences and mis takes are important only in what you have learned from them. Armed with these lessons and with the power of God, you can face up to whatever con fronts you with perfect poise and understanding, peace, and love, “The wise in heart will re ceive commandments . , , love covereth all transgressions.” Proverbs 10:8-i 2.
