To Fayetteville Slate’s Oiiponents
FAYETTEVILLE • Swish!
Swish! Swish! Is it Alton
Cogdell? Is it Larry Cogdell?
These two players are presently
bringing a lot of “oohs" and
“aahs” from Bronco followers
around the CIAA with their
spectacular plays and play-
making
Coach Thomas Reeves, skip
per of the talent-laden Fayette
ville State University Bronco
basketball squad, has a brother
combination this year which is
proving to be a devastating
force on the hardwood

bounder, and cat-like ball-
handler. who is averaging 22.5
points a game and 9 6 rebound
per contest. However, another
Cogdell. Larry to be exact, has
emerged on the Bronco cage
scene which is giving coach
Reeves double dynamite mate
rial on the hardwood.
Alton, the younger brother,
plays forward while his big
brother Larry holds down the
pivot-spot.
l..arry, a 6-6, 220 pounder who
wears number fifty-one for the
Bronco-men, started playing in
t^e second semester at FSU and
has been nothing short of
sensational. Both of the bro
thers are products of nearby
Saint Pauls. North Carolina and
played their high school ball at
Eastside High School.
In nine games for the
Reeves-men, I..arry Cogdell has
poured in a total of 82 points and
grabbed 72 big rebounds. At this
point, older brother Larry is
averaging eight rebounds a
LARRY COGDELL
game and has a 9.1 scoring
average. Little brother Alton is
not doing too bad either. In a
super individual effort against
Elizabeth City State University,
Alton tossed in a season-high of
-to points while pulling down 19
rebounds.
In 19 games for the Broncos
this campaign, Alton has .722
field goal percentage mark. The
classy 6-4, 190 pound forward
has pulled down 183 rebounds,
bucketed 429 points for a 22.5
game average.
ALTON COGDELL
Alton has also been selected
as the “Player-of-the-Week” in
District 29 of the NAIA during
December.
Presently coach Thomas
Reeves is seeking his second
straight berth in the CIAA with
13-7 overall mark. His CIAA
record is 8-t.

Murchinson Is Top Player
FAYETTEVILLE • Terrence
Murchison, "Mr. Clutch" of the
coach Thomas L. Reeves'
basketball forces, has been
selected District 29 NAIA
"Player-of-the-Week,” January
9-12.
The former star of E. E.
Smith High School in Fayette
ville and All-Eastern N.C.
basketball player, has been a
starter for ^e Fayetteville
State University Broncos for
three straight seasons.
A senior and team co-captain,
Murchison scored his season
high against Virginia State
College by sinking 23 points
while pulling down 14 rebounds.
Playing only the first half in
the contest with Livingstone
College, the Fayetteville native
sank 16 points and collected 11
rebounds.
Murchison is averaging 13.5
rebounds per contest and
sinking 11.3 baskets a game. His
heroics have helped FSU to a 3-1
district record and 9-5 mark
overall.
Murchison, a senior and
honor student, is co-captain of
the squad and is majoring in
Business Administration at
Fayetteville State University.
"I feel very honored to have
TERRY MURCHINSON
been selected as District 29
Player-of-the-Week”, said the
rangy 6-6, 190 pound eager
"and I will continue to do m>
very best as the
progresses."
FAYETTEVILLE - He is
known around cage circles for
his fancy white boots and
flashing smile.
He is the skipper of the
Fayetteville Slate University
basketball forces. His name is
coach Thomas L. Reeves and he
is off to a great start in the CIAA
basketball race this season.
The likeable head basketball
coach is beginning his third
year at Bronco-land, and is
steadily moving toward another
CIAA Tourney berth. Presently,
his talent-laden squad has a 8-4
CIAA mark and stand hold a
13-7 overall worksheet. The only
conterence losses nave oeen to
Johnson C. Smith University,
.Norfolk State College and
Winston-Salem State Universi
ty and Elizabeth City.
However, the contests with
these CIAA-foes were not
decided until the late stage of
the game, and the Reeves-men
will have rematches with these
teams before the season con
cludes.
This year the Reeves-men are
blessed' with a very well
balanced squad although there
are some outstanding individual
players. Alton Cogdell, Ter
rence Murchison. James Tyus,
Roy Birch. Sam Smith, Larry
Cogdell, Robert Wilson and
Rubin Ruffin are just a few of
the many fine players on the
Bronco team this year.
Alton Cogdell is one of the
league-leading scorers and field
goal percentage shooters, while
Terrence Murchison is a
rebounding and shooting star.
Reeves, the genial leader of
the Broncos, has vowed to take
his team all the way this season.
"I believe that we are going to
surprise u lot of peopl^^his
REEVES
season," the smiling cage boss
said earlier in the campaign.
Coach Reeves was voted
CIAA Tourney Coach-of-the-
Year at Greensboro last year as
his Broncos bowed to Norfolk
State College for the CIAA
Tourney crown. "This year I
want to take the whole thing",
said Reeves.
At the midway point of the
CIAA race, the FSU Broncos
appear to have the momentum
to do just that.
The Police Athletic League of
New York has established a
"Superstar of tlie Year” award
and has named as its first
recipient Willie Mays. At a
$100-a plate dinner on Jan. 30,
Mays will receive the plaque
"for accomplishments in his
profession, and for serving as
an ideal for youth."
' SHAW STARTERS • Robert Smith, left, and John Partin, right, will be in the starting line-up for the
Shaw Bears Saturday night when the Bears play host to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in a
