The Chorale Society at Laodicea United Church of Christ, held a spirited practice at the church Simday at 6 p.m. Practice for this weekend will be held Sunday at the church at 4:30. Mr. “Al'' Newkirk is working harder than before to erase some glaring weakness es and to improve the overall quality of performance. The Interdenominational Men's Chorus will hold its weekly rehearsal at Laodicea United Church of Oirist at 2:30 p.m. Mr. Bernard Rogers is the president; Mr. Lamonte Mit chell is director; and Mr. 0. L. Taylor is organist. I went by a local mortuary last weekend to pay my respects to the memory of one Mr. Bernard Upchurch. Bernie had been a household word for his devoted mother-in-law. Rut no. Bernie's remains had already been carried to Provi dence Holiness Church. In his place. I saw the smiling face of another well-known person, the wife of the late Dr. W. B. Pettiford. What an inspiration she had been to a vast number of children at the old D.D. & B. institute or the more modem Governor Morehead School The Interdenominational Men’s Chorus did the Lincoln's Day Digram Sunday at 4 p.m. at Wilson Temple United Methodist Episcopal Church. The group, under the baton of Mr. Lamonte Mitchell, with Mr. 0. L. Taylor at the piano and Mr. R. Simmons at the organ, did the usual. Soloists for the occasion were Mr. Melvin Privette. tenor and Mr. Giff Coles, brilliant baritone. Mr. Privette and Mr. Mitchell did a soul-lifting duet at the beginning of the closing scries. Mr. Cliff Coles also served as master of ceremonies. The originator of the idea was present and was accorded a big hand. ITie D. A. Peace Quartette came up with a new nurnoer. with some striking variations. Words of encour agement were delivered by Mr. Cecil Flagg. Mrs. Boyd, the president of the sponsoring group and Rev. T. V. Carter, minister. This week brings new joys, but at the same time, new sadness. Dr. Ellen Alston and Mrs. K. N. Cumbo pass^. Dr. Alston had been my neighbor more than 20 years. She taught for me at St. Matthew AME Church's 2 weeks ahead of the first Woman's Day. She was the Woman’s Day speaker 2 weeks later. What training, what experience, what techni ques, what leadership quality, 'hie Baptist people to^ advan tage and for vears, she gave of herself unselfishly to the end that the post now held by Mrs. M. A. Horne might be perpetu ated. Certainly, Mrs. Hmne is a worthy successor. I'm always moved by the devotion of Mrs. B. F. Gumbo's children and justly so. I knew “B.F.” I knew her struggles after his demise; I knew her frustrations as only insurance agents can I salute her avenue to victory, I commend the ctmtributions which she made to family and students. Few women had U as bleak; none I know worked anv harder to overcome. I was her agent in '37; I admire her courage today in '77. The Volunteers Qub finally came up with its long overdue meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whitley. 616 E. Cabarrus St. Mr. D.
